Transactional telehealth models and retail primary care clinics have unfortunately proven untenable: well intended solutions, but underutilized and with impossible economics. There’s a clear mandate to learn from these failures and innovate more intelligently. HealthTap believes virtual-first, relationship based, longitudinal primary care is what will ultimately deliver real and sustainable value. Here are two thought pieces from our Chief Commercial Officer, Craig Hittle and Chief Medical Officer, Geoffrey Rutledge. 💡 From Craig Hittle: Henry Ford famously said: “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently”. The continued barrage of news surrounding the failure of transactional telehealth and retail primary care clinics models is eye opening. We MUST learn from these experiences and be more intelligent about how we engage with the behavioral and economic realities of delivering primary care. Here’s our take and call to action: 1️⃣ Investing in virtual first care is the ONLY way to create long term sustainable healthcare economics in primary care. Primary care has traditionally been a money loser and too capital intensive - it's just the sobering reality. But because it is the quarterback of our healthcare system, let’s pull back on the brick/mortar building brigade and double down on the longitudinal virtual care delivery infrastructure and experience. 2️⃣ We must add primary care capacity, access, and quality without making it cost prohibitive and so negative ROI. This requires virtual solutions that scale, that are high quality, that address a majority of primary care needs, and that support appropriate triage to in person care as needed. 3️⃣ Care must be longitudinal and truly relationship based to create real value. Healthcare is personal and sacred. OUT with the random and transactional doctor urgent care model and IN with the concierge level PCP. Patients deserve this, and providers in their heart of hearts want this. 4️⃣ Virtual providers must make it easy to share info and talk to in person providers via an integratable platform. Tech companies that have purpose built virtual care platforms with deep integration capabilities will win, and this goes beyond the ubiquitous "API". 5️⃣ We must prevent excessive turf competition with PCPs constantly fighting about attribution and instead allow them to practice top of license, give them options to deliver and coordinate care, and still achieve desirable economics. Most PCPs are too busy to take on new patients anyways! Alternatively, we need to enable health systems, PCPs and ACOs to concurrently maintain control of their existing panels while also expanding their services, reach and economics. Systems leverage virtual care providers as extensions of existing medical groups, providing much more cost effective care under existing payer contracts and VBC arrangements and funneling speciality and in person care needs within the high value health system.
Is telehealth declining? Hardly! We're moving from lower value, transactional "digital urgent care" to the highest value relationship-based ongoing virtual primary care from a doctor you know and trust. #virtualprimarycare #telehealth #HealthTap
Is virtual primary care going to be a big thing?
