Patient engagement has more benefits than we think! ๐ช Patient engagement refers to actively involving the patient in decisions about their treatment and care. This is a collaborative approach involves healthcare professionals, caregivers, and the patient's family working together to achieve the best outcome. There are various patient engagement methods, such as surveys, questionnaires, informal face-to-face feedback, interviews, and focus groups. Besides, patient digital portals, text/email notifications, and remote doctors calls can also facilitate patient engagement by enabling them to manage appointments, order prescriptions, and access test results. When patients are engaged in their care, they are likely to experience faster recovery and be at lower risk for complications from unmanaged symptoms. We at Assista Health Services, LLP, helps patient to get involved in their care plan and stay connected with their doctor seamlessly. Engaged patients are also more likely to adopt preventive behaviors such as regular health checkups, immunizations, mammograms, and nutritious eating, as well as to engage in regular exercise and avoid risky behaviors like smoking, drug use, and excessive drinking. Furthermore, engaged patients are more likely to identify diseases or diagnoses early, potentially avoiding intensive interventions and grave prognosis, which can be costly to both the healthcare system and the patient and their family.

Very good article on some of the risks to the Patient with Patient Engagement advisory boards โWe are six patient partners in Canada who aim to contribute to learning and to provide an opportunity to reflect on patient engagement (PE) in research and healthcare environments. Patient engagement refers to โmeaningful and active collaboration in governance, priority setting, conducting research and knowledge translation,โ where patient partners are members of the teams, rather than participants in research or those seeking clinical care. It appears more has been written on the benefits rather than the risks of patient engagement and we feel it is important to document and share what we callโpatient engagement gone wrong.โWe have anonymized these examples and sorted them into four statements: patient partners as a check mark, unconscious bias towards patient partners, lack of support to fully include patient partners, and lack of recognizing the vulnerability of patient partners. These statements and their examples are meant to show that patient engagement gone wrong is more common than discussed openly, and to simply bring this to light. With this commentary, we do not mean to lay blame, and instead wish to evolve and improve patient engagement initiatives.
