This International Women’s Day, the theme is "inspire inclusion." I love this theme because it uplifts inspiring stories. It reminds us of the acts of courage women have made to shatter glass ceilings, make history, and pave the way for future generations. But it’s also a call to action. Inclusion is a big focus at Johnson & Johnson. For us, this means including the voices of women at all levels of our company – and taking action to meet the unique needs of women in communities we serve around the world. One way this comes to life is through our partnerships. What is FemTech? For those who are late, you are still on time - thanks to the new report by McKinsey & Company which did a great job in uncovering what matters. It matters, for example, that we are losing a ton of money in female health. Consider this: For women, we invest much more in pathologies that lead to death (e.g. ovarian cancer), rather than disability (e.g. endometriosis). Which makes sense, as a priority. However, there are 10 conditions that heavily lead to disability and that, alone, contribute to 50% of the entire GDP lost. Yet we invest only 1% of the global health budget into these 10 and any other women's health condition, beyond oncology. Some eye-popping stats on cancer disparities: US employed women pay $15 billion more than employed men. Just 54% of cancer survivors report working full time, further exacerbating the consequences of uneven care. 34% of the costs borne by women are due to inadequate care AND women suffer from 34% more (debilitating and very expensive) side effects of cancer treatments than men. Women’s experiences are hamstrung by bigotry every step of the way. My dear friend, Emma Ricci-De Lucca, designed this report on the deleterious effects of cancer by sex. She uses visual information to convey the discrepancies with aplomb. May this research and that of others continue to elucidate the good that can be done in eradicating this scourge. (The cancer vaccines are particularly inspiring—all hopes they are universal within the decade!)
