🗣#tclabfollowsnews 🚨 Important Read for Software Testers in Healthcare Tech A recent alarming breach has underscored the paramount importance of cybersecurity in the healthcare sector. Nearly one million personal, financial, and medical records have potentially been compromised from the City of Hope Cancer Center, a notable healthcare organization in the United States. 📰 This incident, as reported by The Register, highlights a disturbing trend of cyber-thieves targeting hospitals and healthcare providers. Between September 19 and October 12, 2023, unauthorized access was gained to the City of Hope's systems, exposing a vast amount of sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, medical records, and financial details. While the City of Hope has taken steps to mitigate the impact of this breach, and there's no immediate evidence of identity theft or fraud, the breach itself is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that exist within our IT infrastructures. Especially in healthcare, where the stakes are incredibly high. 👨💻 Why This Matters for Software Testers: For those of us in software testing and quality assurance, especially in healthcare technology, this incident is a call to action. It underscores the critical need for rigorous testing protocols, robust security measures, and ongoing vigilance to protect against such vulnerabilities. The investigation of the breach took place "immediately" - "On Sunday, August 27, 2023". BleepingComputer report "Keenan & Associates is sending notices of a data breach to 1.5 million customers, warning that hackers accessed their personal information in a recent cyberattack." (January 2024). Andrew A. would no doubt comment that it took them that long to define this incident as a 'material breach' thus according the SEC Regulation would need to be reported. Keenan provides #insurance and budgetary solutions for schools, public agencies and health care organisations. The interesting filing time limit is a stringent filing deadline of 30 days for reporting insurance losses (Source: Keenan & Associates) The compromised data extracted by the network intruders from Keenan's systems encompasses sensitive details such as full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (SSN), passport numbers, driver's license numbers, health insurance information, and general health information. A comprehensive analysis of publicly exposed data from Keenan's systems reveals a disconcerting linkage to over 105 third-party data breaches (Source: Keenan.com; https://lnkd.in/ePPdq_ct). Add the #supplychain impact multiplier, the cyber criminals have a large data footprint to use to enable fraudulent access to an organisation. To assess and mitigate the risk within your #supplychain, we recommend scanning your email domain at breachaware.com/scan. These numbers are likely to grow exponentially with ransomware become a lucrative craft for threat actors and a seemingly "no more rules" attitude by the attackers. The consolidation and networking of major healthcare entities sets up a chain of events that could impact hospitals and health care over large geographic areas due to networks and people being vulnerable to phishing campaigns and attacks designed to bypass MFA and EDR systems. Many of the tools used by security teams for Red Team testing are being utilized straight from GitHub as malware/ransomware droppers. #healthcare #phishing #ransomware #cybersecurity
No one, especially medical institutions and healthcare service providers want to face a class-action law suite due to cybercriminals stealing sensitive patient data. As of August, over 220 healthcare institutions in the US alone have been victims of a cyberattack. The largest one has affected nearly 1.4M patients. The healthcare industry is a prime target for cyberattacks due to the massive amounts of sensitive data involved. #cybersecurity #healthcarecybersecurity https://lnkd.in/egMVXKHc

Class action lawsuits can really accelerate the costs of a data breach. However, do let stories like this be a red herring for what is far more common: Ransomware and cybercrime. Most organizations have a relatively low risk of a data breach because they don't collect much data. However, they still often need forensics after an incident. Basically, don't lose sight on how broad this risk is. It isn't just about data. But... in this case, it is about data. https://lnkd.in/gCGsYD6s
