Have you ever felt like, as an industry, we speak in circles, and say the same thing all the time, but nothing ever really changes?
At USOLMT, we think a lack of leadership progression is part of the problem, so, we've decided to work our elections of Board Members differently than our other associations.
When the numbers in our membership base can support an election, here is how that will work:
*We believe anyone can be a leader, so, we're giving new graduates the opportunity to apply for leadership. They can apply after 1 year of licensure if they are a massage therapist. We're doing this to ensure that new, up and coming therapists who are interested in advancing their careers have an opportunity to do so, and we believe that will bring fresh perspectives to the industry as a whole.
*Our candidates for the board will be elected on their individual merits and will have to "run" for their seats. Their campaigns will begin in October of an election year, and they will have until December 15 to convince their peers they should be elected to the USOLMT Board of Directors.
*Voting will take place in mid-late December, and new board members will be seated in January the following year.
*Currently, our Bylaws state that the membership will have the opportunity to elect their leaders when the membership base can support an election, but, not before 2025.
*Our currently appointed board is tasked with business development and leadership, and is a working board, setting up USOLMT programs, developing the business, and laying the foundation for the association to succeed. By the time we get to an election, the first elected board will be a governing board.
What’s the difference between a “working” Board of Directors and a “governing” board of directors?
First off, working boards are governing boards. Just like governing boards, working boards are responsible for the overall strategy and policies of an organization. However, the members of a working board do the work to implement strategies, policies, and programs. The members of a governing board don’t do this work. They are simply responsible for their fiduciary duties and association oversight.
