Starting tomorrow (May 6), the American Academy of Family Physicians will host its 2024 Physician Health & Well-Being Conference. The one thing I appreciate about this conference is it is a comprehensive approach to physician well-being that focuses on assisting the individual, but also on system change that improve the clinical work environment. For example, there are courses on: - Assess your individual current state of well-being and develop personal well-being improvement plan. - Develop a personal action plan to improve, promote, and/or maintain a positive state of well-being. But there are also courses on: - Identify the five ecosystems of health care that impact career satisfaction and physician well-being and connect to improved patient outcomes. - Determine personal areas of need to address chronic stressors within practice. - Develop leadership plan that seeks to improve patient outcomes through improved organization or group level systems. I am really proud of this program and the incredible work our staff and the faculty have put into making this a best-in-class education opportunity for family physicians and other participants. https://lnkd.in/gJvmv7Jt

“What would you do, doc?” This is a question that physicians often hear from their patients or their loved ones, and it’s not a question that palliative care physicians Dr. John Mulder and Dr. Jason Beckrow think doctors should shy away from. However, the key to answering it is having an understanding of your patient's values and belief systems and realizing how their options fit into those. You can listen at the link below to learn more about how the doctors build trust with their patients as they help them through decision-making. https://lnkd.in/gTtiz4v3

Media release: Shared Goals of Care creates two-way conversations for patient care 👉 Read the media release: https://lnkd.in/gnni3fqJ Te Whatu Ora Southern is excited to launch Shared Goals of Care on 25th September 2023 to foster two-way conversations among clinicians, patients and whānau. Shared goals of care are when all parties explore a patient’s values, the care and treatment options available and agree the goal of care for the current admission and if the patient deteriorates. Dr David Gow, Chief Medical Officer for Southern, highlights that Shared Goals of Care is an important safety improvement for our patients from the previous consultation process. Dr. Rebecca Brushwood, Chair of the Shared Goals of Care Steering Group, says the Southern team is thrilled about the go-live of Shared Goals of Care as it provides a conversation that puts the patient in the centre with discussions around care plans and patient’s wishes. “It is reassuring for the patient and their whānau that their autonomy and decisions in their care will be carried out by our dedicated teams." 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gbrYcuYr Image: Consumer Representative, Natalie Brown with a Shared Goals of Care form. #SharedGoalsOfCare #PatientCare

As a physicians we constantly reflect on how we can best fulfill our patients' values and needs. Two essential factors stand out: firstly, patients seek quality care, and they rightfully anticipate us to demonstrate courage by consistently doing what's right for them. Secondly, they look to us to infuse every action with compassion, treating them not just as cases, but as individuals deserving of heartfelt attention. It's this combination of providing top-notch care while showing genuine compassion that truly defines our uniqueness and purpose as healthcare providers.
