HBS Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship’s Post

During our reunion session, Elise Bates led a fantastic discussion about the value of a personal advisory board. She shared pivotal moments from her professional journey where advisors stepped in to guide her as she built her organizations or acted as accountability partners. Elise emphasized that an effective Personal Advisory Board should include: 1. Master: Older, wiser, and more experienced than you. Often someone you've worked for or with in previous companies. 2. Peer: A contemporary in your same industry or someone who has known you in a common environment, such as graduate school, an early job, or a shared board. 3. Expert: Someone with subject matter expertise and experience, whether in a specific skill or business area, or in life goals like financial planning, wellness, or familial advice. 4. Industry: A person with deep industry expertise and experience critical to your work. 5. Friend: A trusted friend who knows your core values and life priorities and has been with you in many different settings. Honest and productive. Elise's insights highlight how diverse and crucial each role on an advisory board can be, contributing significantly to personal and professional growth. Now, it's time to reflect on your own personal advisory board. Do you have these roles covered? If not, consider assembling or evaluating your board to ensure you have the support you need to thrive. Feel free to share your approach to building your advisory board in the comments below! #HBSEntrepreneurship
