🚢🔍 Exploring Excess Material at Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities After delving into the highlights of the #MFA report, today we’re embarking on a fascinating journey to explore the #ExcessMaterial management at the port of #Zwolle! 🌟 What can the Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities do with excess materials ❔ #REDIIPorts work-package 1 wrapped up its first pilot on analysing excess materials (“#waste”) in three North-Sea port regions. The report is published and can be found on the REDII website: https://lnkd.in/dfkxdM27 💡 In short: The research aimed to identify opportunities for more #circular material usage. Three North-Sea ports (and REDII partners) were used as case studies in this research: Eigersund Næring og Havn KF (NO), Skagen Havn - Port of Skagen (DK) and Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities (NL). 📝Approach for Port of #Zwolle: The MFA analysis utilizes data from the dutch national registry as the LMA (landelijk Meldpunt afvalstromen). This database contains data on waste disposal by business on a #municipality level. The data specifies in which location what types and mass of waste materials are produced, as well as how they are processed and by whom.   🎯 Outcomes: opportunities for Port of Zwolle These material flow analyses showed there are many opportunities for circular material usage for the industries in the five municipalities surrounding the Port of Zwolle | Port of Opportunities. Using #materials in a more circular manner enables closing loops regionally and value #retention. This has the potential to not only provide environmental benefits but also socio-economic benefits by reducing costs and improving #resilience and #independence. For example, sewage sludge is currently burned for energy but can be processed to recover nutrients for agriculture, capture biogas and create biofuel feedstock. The MFA also shows opportunities for #foodwaste: beyond composting, excess can be used to create nutritious food-products from the food industry leftovers. Something that Distribugs is already doing in the area of Meppel. Lastly, there are also opportunities for wood reusing: circular demolition and deconstruction helps reclaim wood. Wood hubs can provide these secondary materials in an affordable way, reducing both costs and environmental impacts. Weever circulair is already doing that within Port of Zwolle. 🤝 Partners: VIVES Research (University of Applied Sciences) and Noordelijk Innovatielab Circulaire Economie | NICE together lead WP1 and subcontracted Metabolic for the material flow analysis.
