"Sorry, but that is your culture". Harsh words from a candidate explaining a conversation they had with a Founder. The final person they met in the interview process, a senior member of the team, was unprepared and clearly hadn't looked at their CV, didn't listen, and totally put them off. 😲 An offer was made, and then the candidate declined... Why? The final interview. Candidates only get one chance to wow you at an interview, but remember, this is a two-way street. You only get one chance to win over a candidate, and we are in a market where candidates are not always keen to jump ship. The grass may be greener at your firm, but you must prove it. 🦗 The candidate told the Founder they were declining because of the culture. They felt the interview led them to believe there wouldn't be good enough communication at a senior level so things wouldn't get surfaced across the company. 🙈🙉🙊 The Founder told the candidate, "But that is not our culture". Sorry, but that is your culture. It may not be the culture you aspire to, and it's tough to hear, but culture is not aspiration—it is reality. Years ago, I helped a company survey everyone who came to interview about their candidate experience. One part of the business was consistently flagged for turning up late to interviews, which put numerous great candidates off. ⏲️ This team had a large number of meetings and a heavy workload, hence the punctuality problem. It did indicate what the culture was like in that team, and some candidates picked up on it and dropped out of the hiring process. When it comes to experience, reality is what candidates perceive it to be, not what your intention was. Candidates will pick up on small things and create their own narrative. 🔮 There will be some people who thought the lateness was rude, others who felt it made them more nervous, and others who didn't read anything into it. Now, back to the original story. Not actively listening in an interview is going to put a lot of people off. Was this person not listening? They could have been an inexperienced interviewer who was underprepared and thought up questions on their feet that didn't translate. Maybe their mind was elsewhere. Maybe there was a political agenda. Maybe they were not feeling well. What do you think? Was the candidate too quick to judge? Does this resonate? Was the Founder wrong? ❓ ➡️ Whatever, the key takeaway is to remember that candidates are interviewing you. Even if you think someone is not right, they should leave thinking that the interview was great, went well and they would love to work for your company. 💖 I vividly remember the worst interview experience I ever had—in 2005! They kept me waiting, were underprepared, and everyone who worked there looked so sad. That was nearly 20 years ago, and it sticks to this day how awful that company looked as a place to work, but I don't really know if it was. #culture #techstartups #Founder #candidateexperience #startup

I feel the candidate made the right decision. If the company couldn't take the time and make the proper arrangements in an effort to attract the candidate, I don't believe they would make the time during tough situations.

The final interview is a two-way street. While a single interaction might not be definitive, the candidate's experience raises red flags about potential cultural misalignment.

Don’t ignore red flags. Easier said than done but it always comes back to bite you. Good on the candidate 👍🏾

What do we think the Agencies role could have been in this situation? I’m sure it wasn’t looking to recruit people into a poor culture.
