An agency leader (name withheld to protect the innocent 🕵🏻♀️) recently shared a story with me about a pitch meeting where the clients in the room clearly disagreed with one another. They all had different answers to the same questions. I cannot stress enough the importance of internal alignment—not just when selecting a new agency, but long before it reaches that stage. So, how do you get everyone on the same page? It starts with knowing who “everyone” is: ❓ Who are the senior stakeholders whose opinions we need to consider? ❓ Who are the people who will be working with the agency day-to-day? ❓ Who are the ultimate decision-makers? There’s often overlap, but they aren’t always the same individuals, and their opinions and involvement in the agency review process should be weighed accordingly. Once you have this knowledge, the meeting becomes one of equals and the tone of the conversation is more collaborative. • Plan: Think through how you want the negotiation to go in advance, and create an agenda in your mind. You need to know your starting point, what you are prepared to negotiate or trade on, and the end point that you want to achieve. • Listen: This is an obvious but essential one. In so many negotiations, people talk to fill the silence and invariably tell you what they didn’t want to. By listening, you can ensure that the outcome works for both you and them - if it doesn’t, the agreement won’t have longevity. I'm pleased to share that I'm making progress in signing two more accounts that have been close to my heart since the beginning of this effort. With dedicated work, I hope to finalize these signings in the coming weeks. Once these signings are secured, my plan is to temporarily close my roster.
