When I started in partnerships, I just thought everything would go simply and easily. I mean, how hard is it to motivate people when you have a great solution to sell? When I first started in partnerships, I was told we were signing contracts with a major partner in a new route to market. I figured, okay, maybe a couple more weeks. Finally, 12 months later we were ready to start selling with this partner. One year! I couldn't believe it. I learned that partnerships takes a long time to launch, to grow, and to maintain. And the best way to make your partnership program grow? Show up—every single day. Consistency is the difference. How do you become successful in partnerships? It all starts internally. You must have the whole company onboard in order for things to work, otherwise you’ll all be pulling in different directions. Or worse, they have a bad experience with our team and never work with us again? You need to remember that you think about your product 100% more of the time than anyone else. A good partner manager recognizes that your partner team is busy. How do you solve that problem? how do you stay top of mind? How can you create raving fans in your partners? Provide content that is valuable to the partner achieving their goal. Do you know your partner's goals? Does your product directly help them achieve their quota? (And it's not just, "well, if they sell our product they will hit quota...") You need more. A good partnership strategy is a living, breathing thing. It's not a "one-and-done" document that you create. Building an effective partnerships motion in your company is a journey. Your partnership strategy will serve as the map throughout that journey.
