I was born and raised in Omaha, so I know very well that a farmer with a 10,000-acre farm couldn't take on a multinational 100,000-acre farming conglomerate. The same goes for independent physicians. They are powerless against the might of private equity and large healthcare firms. And in the same way that family farmers need the support of a co-op and of high-end equipment, individual physicians need access to the best tools, the broadest network, and strongest possible community to succeed. To turn back the tide in their favor, they need the power of numbers: a physician network and a community of practitioners. That’s why my co-founder and I started Independent Health Alliance, or IHA: to give a diverse group of specialties and associated physicians what they need - the latest tools, structured support from other doctors, and independence from private equity and other large entities. Doctors who participate in IHA no longer have to wave goodbye to 25% of every PE-owned dollar as it goes out to investors. Instead, they can keep that money to deliver better - even free - care to their patients. It’s time to use the power of numbers to fend off the entities that keep doctors from delivering great care.

A few days ago Virbac published its 2023 annual report. We had a great year, most notably marked by a 5% growth in revenue, as a result of the implementation of our 2030 plan and the commitment of all our teams across our subsidiaries! These 35 subsidiaries did impressive work, especially in R&D initiatives, which allowed us to pursue sustainable growth, advance the well-being of our teams and animal health, while preserving a balanced planetary footprint. At Virbac, we know how essential our personal relationships are with veterinarians, farmers, and animal owners across the world. These relationships are how we ultimately understand their expectations and respond to the major challenges of animal health. 2023 was also an occasion to pursue numerous initiatives developed by our subsidiaries—initiatives that enabled our employees to grow, progress, learn, and be at their best. Are vets good value for money? At BSAVA 2023, Charles Carr and I presented a poster from a project in which he asked pet owners if they felt vets were good value for money, and he also explored if that figure depended on how an estimate was written. It was a research project that Charles did when he was a student and I was at RVC. He sent out a survey that asked people how well they rated vets for value for money and presented them with 5 vignettes. In half of them, he presented participants an estimate that contained consumables and the other half the bill was focussed on business costs. He asked if they felt the bill was good value for money as he wanted to see if they understood our costs better, then they would think vets were better value for money. The results- of 1206 participants, 22% felt we provide good to excellent value for money, and 40 % said poor value. There was no statistically significant difference between their value for money score if they were presented the consumables vs the business costs. Other research shows that clients are very much more interested in the impact on their animal, not surprisingly. They also want to trust us, and leave when that trust is broken. With all the CMA discussions, I totally agree that transparency is key is money talk, but we should probably orient it heavily onto value for the animal, not ‘how much it costs to run a business’ and also focus on how we manage clients through their journey through the practice, so we can build and maintain trust.
