Our Youth Solutions Innovations team, Alexandra Packer, Donna Rummel, Gretchen Panicucci, & Billy Bosquez, recently conducted our first "Connecting Careers to the Core" professional development session at Shelby Middle School, one of the first schools to start working with our YS Select service. Eighteen educators gained a heightened awareness of integrating careers into core curriculum, applied transferable skills to their class content, and learned to seamlessly incorporate careers into existing lessons. Feedback was unanimously positive, with 100% rating the session as highly effective, expressing satisfaction, and indicating a strong intention to implement the strategies learned. To paraphrase one attending teacher's comment, "At first, I was thinking this was just one more thing I'm going to be asked to do and that's added to my plate. You've made it easy to think about how to make our teaching more relevant to students. And our students are able to expand their awareness of all different career options." South Lanarkshire College are offering an HNC in Working with Communities starting in January 24, running through till December 24  We all know 2023 hasn’t been without it challenges! The communities we live within are facing a cost-of-living crisis that is likely to be engulfing your neighbours and maybe even yourself, on an individual level there is a mental health pandemic impacting on so many sections of society. The economy is tinkering on a recession and any shoots of recovery are dwarfed by food, fuel and other utility price hikes. Russia’s imperialist ambitions, not to mention the tyrannical insecurities of their oligarchical leadership hampered a post covid recovery and the conflict in Gazza has the potential to escalate.  There is however scope for hopes, dreams and aspirations! For all aspects of our communities are as vulnerable as ever before there is a growing groundswell of opinion that the answers lie not in Holyrood, Westminister or the seat of local governments but in communities themselves. There is even access to funding streams to resource the brightest ideas, projects and developments. Putting it plainly there are career opportunities offering massive professional satisfaction out there. This course will put you on the path to accessing such opportunities and indeed, if you choose to, progression onto university, gaining advanced entry to second year study.  UWS, Glasgow University and beyond offer Community Development or Community Education Degrees. In a short period of time, you would have the potential to transform your life and the scope to transform the lives of those in the communities that you would go on to serve!   If you are reading this thinking study isn’t for me, think again! You might be the very type of student we value and love to teach- one with life experience. Did you know? The Right to Education (RTE) Act played a significant role in boosting total enrollment, especially at the upper primary level. From 5,33,50,189 in 2008-09 to 6,54,48,222 in 2017-18, there was a notable increase (DISE).
