The lack of UK institutional participation in venture capital is very sad. I’ve raised $500M+ over my career; 96% from US, 3% from Europe (exc UK) and just 1% from the UK. “I have raised more money in Michigan than I have in London”. This is a 🔥 discussion on 20VC with Matt Clifford. 👇 #Founder #funding #business #investing #vc #venturecapital #entrepreneur #startup
Congrats on raising 96% of your capital outside the UK and faster in Michigan than in London Harry Stebbings. I have to say, I’m both impressed and a bit bewildered. As someone who's been in the game for a while, I keep hearing that local capital is the holy grail for funds and startups. But your experience seems to flip that script. So, what’s the secret sauce for raising locally in the UK and Europe? Is it the communication style, the mindset, or is there some hidden ingredient we’re all missing? I’d love to hear more, because clearly, some of us need to update our playbooks. Plus, any excuse to learn something new is a good one!
5% of AUM that pension funds could invest in social enterprises, climate and the innovative projects would remove poverty, improve education, healthcare and have a huge positive impact on GDP.
Yes but it’s bigger than just VC. Capital formation in the UK stretching from early stage venture to late stage growth capital either from private or public markets trails behind all of the most dynamic world economies. I have not heard anything from Labour focused on addressing this issue. In 1997’at least they had the promise of PFI, even though inepptly implanted where risk never really left the public sector.
Wonder if EU LPs want to have more exposure to VCs residing in the U.S.? 95% from U.S. vs 1% from UK and 3% from EU for $500M+ raised, sounds a bit skewed.
This conversation could be crucial in raising awareness and potentially catalyzing changes in the UK's approach to venture capital investment.
Typically true in Australia too, which is why QIC’s recent market-leading VC initiative backing firms like Jekara Group is so powerful.

2wTHIS 👆 is the biggest thing holding back UK (and EU) start up / scale up ecosystems. A lack of people that understand venture, that get their head around power laws of return and understand the upsides. It's very easy to point at the risks and a historic track record, dip a toe in and get burnt. On the flip side it's a huge opportunity for growth for those that work out how to play this game. Well done Matt Clifford for calling this out. We need to keep repeating it.
