We're so proud and excited for the St. Edward's Parish as we continue to work to make their new parish church a reality. It will be the first purpose-built FSSP church in U.S. and continues a great tradition, both architecturally and liturgically. https://lnkd.in/gz6ChCqw

For the People of Michigan Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992, the Michigan State Capitol is one of the first state capitols to be topped with a lofty, cast-iron dome. Inside, the magnificent rotunda and nine acres of decorative fine arts give homage to Civil War Veterans. Currently undergoing conservation, the rotunda requires detailed cleaning to ensure longevity in preserving history. “We have a mantra we use on our staff called “we don’t settle for good enough, we want to go from good to great.” So that great bar is where our standard is, so now it’s our goal as stewards to make sure that we work, clean, and maintain this building to that level,” said Executive Director Robert Blackshaw of the Michigan State Capitol. John Canning & Co., experts in preservation, are working alongside additional conservation professionals on this project, making their work seamless from one to another, making the work look like it has been done by one hand. David Riccio, Principal of John Canning & Co., said, “when I look around the rotunda, I see a tour de force of decoration and craftsmanship. It’s monumental and worthy of the People of Michigan”. Much like things of greatness often do, this monumental project will continue to Summer of 2024 as the preservation, conservation, and restoration professional team collaborates with Michigan State Capitol executives throughout the process. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲? The White House, an iconic symbol of the United States, is renowned for its distinctive white appearance. However, its journey to becoming the White House we know today was not initially planned. This report explores the evolution of the White House's colour, from its early whitewash to its eventual iconic white status. The Original Whitewash: When the White House was first painted, a lime-based whitewash was chosen. This choice allowed the building to weather naturally over time, with the white colour limited to cracks and crevices. However, this intended effect was not realised due to regular repainting, preventing the desired weathering process. The Emergence of the "White House" Nickname: Approximately ten years after its construction, the White House acquired the nickname "White House," likely due to its prominent appearance and the whitewash used on its exterior. However, this nickname was informal and not officially recognised at the time. The Transformation to Official White: In 1818 a significant change occurred as the White House received a more permanent makeover. Lead-based white paint was applied, giving the building a uniform white colour and solidifying its association with the "White House" nickname. This marked the beginning of its recognisable appearance. Theodore Roosevelt's Official Declaration: The nickname "White House" had persisted for nearly a century before it was officially recognised. In 1910, during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, he declared the name "White House" as the official and iconic designation for the presidential residence. Since then, it has been universally acknowledged as such #WhiteHouse #HistoricArchitecture #ColourEvolution #PresidentialResidence #IconicDesignation #LearnTheTrade #ScottishDecoratorsFederation

The bricks in the iconic Baltimore row homes aren't just there for looks, they play a key role in regulating temperature! Bricks, made from clay, have high thermal mass, absorbing and storing heat from the sun to keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer. Meanwhile, metal, with low thermal mass, can't hold onto that heat as effectively. As we create the environments that we live, work, and play in, It's important to consider how the multiple elements, such as the materials we build with, and the systems of a building, integrate with each other to form a sustainable whole.
