Radiologists benefit from remote scanning because they receive permanent high-quality examinations for reporting. It is because examinations are performed by highly qualified radiology technologists. When it is performed in the form where specialists are located off-site in one room/office, they can consult with each other and provide the best examination results continuously. Radiologists can avoid frequent and annoying phone calls by using screen sharing and exchanging information live with radiology technologists. The time waiting for the radiologist or radiology technologist to answer the call and the time saved by omitting phone calls can be used to examine more patients. Of course, remote scanning has an economic impact for radiology managers and radiology technologists. However, that is not my focus of my lecture. Recent trends in PACS has moved away from standalone systems to enterprise imaging systems that integrate not only radiology, but all departments that generate imaging and image related reports so they can be centralized in one location and integrated into the over-arching electronic medical record (EMR). Patients benefit from remote scanning because the local operator is solely responsible for patient preparation, patient positioning and patient care. By having a radiographer perform the examination remotely, colleagues at the scanner have more time to spend with patients. Patients do not have to spend hours driving to the specialty center and searching for parking. Instead, they can go to a radiology center close to home and the examination can be performed remotely. Remote scanning allows more patients to be examined, thus shortening wait times for appointments.
