Here we are, just 2 days on from the general election, and everything feels different. It feels like real hope for the first time in a long time! It is truly brilliant to see so many female MPs in power - 41% overall - and to have many women in the cabinet. Our first ever female Chancellor in Rachel Reeves, Angela Raynor as Deputy PM, Yvette Cooper as Home Secretary for starters. Half the front bench are women now, which is all great role modelling for young women and girls. With the majority of the cabinet also being state and not privately educated, the cabinet is also far more representative of the British population in that regard than ever before. And real experts in many positions rather than the top jobs being given to friends/cronies. I may not agree with every one of them on every point, but then again, I highly doubt any of us do, or that they agree with each other on everything. However there is a breadth of life experience and understanding that is refreshing. And exhale... ps to all those complaining about Angela Raynor's suit yesterday...seriously eff off #GE2024 #newbeginnings #womenleaders
In terms of the makeup of the Cabinet & wider MPs, I completely agree with you Harriet Waley-Cohen Although I think they've got a tough job on their hands as so many billions have been funnelled out of the economy and into the untaxed assets of the super-rich over the last few years, and of course the press is going to claim it's their fault rather than the fault of the Tories. But at least now we've stopped further siphoning off of billions to uber-rich offshore/non-dom mates!
You know what, there should be a way of highlighting the posts of people who make comments about peoples appearance - it’s peoples behaviour I’m concerned about, not how they look and sound.
And if you read the bios of all of the cabinet, there is real difference in lived experiences. That is diversity.
I agree it feels good. Yvette is super smart and has a level of compassion we haven’t seen in a Home Secretary for a while ! Angela is the best person to do levelling up from her background she’s also gutsy and passionate (plus in my opinion super well dressed !) and Rachel. It feels like a change in the best way
Absolutely! Agree 100%. Feels like the “grown ups” are in charge now.
And Rwanda deal off already, that is such a great sign!
It’s exciting Harriet isn’t it? So disappointed that Labour didn’t win where I am 🙁

2wAnd sir James Timpson as minister for prisons - someone who has built his company on kindness and trust, actively recruits ex offenders for his company and understands the prison system. Maybe we will see ministers who are competent rather than those who just excel at self promotion
