Force capabilities: electromechanical actuators (EMAs) compared to hydraulic cylinders Cascade Drives EMA systems achieve the required amount of force for the application by balancing the RPM and motor torque, through a gear ratio to the pinion’s capabilities. The motors can create instantaneous torque, in turn instantaneously creating the force. Cascade Drives EMA systems can produce forces up to 400 kN. And, unlike other electromechanical solutions, our patented cdGear technology offers a key benefit for heavy-duty applications – the ability to handle shock loads. In hydraulic cylinder systems, force is produced by a fluid pressing on an area. A hydraulic system at 300 bar and a 100 mm bore cylinder with 30 mm rod, for example, could conceptually generate 235 kN push and 214 kN pull. A Cascade Drives actuator with 100 mm rack is capable of producing up to 400 kN in push and pull. There are a few shortcomings of hydraulic systems related to force that should be considered when selecting a system. First, hydraulic systems can’t produce force instantaneously. The system requires time to build pressure to achieve the force output. Instant force is another advantage electromechanical actuators deliver. The primary difference between quarter-turn and multi-turn actuators is the amount of rotary or linear motion required to operate the valve. Quarter-turn actuators require a rotational motion of 90 degrees or less to operate fully, while multi-turn actuators require multiple rotations to operate fully.
