“Typical case of misinformation to conveniently remove parts of the actual quote. Here is the original.
👉 Because of the sudden absence of traditional enemies, "new enemies must be identified."In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill...All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then is humanity itself."

This full quote does show that Club of Rome is a leading light in a failed sociology of social choosing: that we need to have an enemy; to make social choosing personal and contentious; about Good vs Evil; Us vs Them; Winners vs. Losers.
No. That will not work.
We need to evolve towards prudence at a planetary scale. That requires sociologies of social choosing the affirm some basic truths about our uniquely human way of being human:
- by living together, and apart, as individuals in community, through the social structure we call the economy that is:
- an artificial world that we make for ourselves in which to live, out of the world of Nature into which we all are born that is:
- a mutual aid society for sharing an abundance of technology solutions to the everyday problems of everyday people living our best lives every day;
- through networks of connections for enterprise and exchange;
- to construct, curate and episodically renovate a safe and dignified hours for humanity;
- within built environments of Urban, Rural, Curated and Left-Alone landscapes;
- along the creative edge of an interactive and adaptively evolving Human-Nature Partnership;
- choosing new beginnings from time to time, and over time, to fit the changing times,
- Innovatively, through Civil Society and the marketplace of ideas;
- Predistributively, through Finance and the modalities of money;
- Distributively, through Enterprise and the markets for stuff; and
- Redistributively, through Government, and laws for respecting boundaries.
We don't need enemies to choose prudently, predistributively.
We need dialogue and discussion.
