A political battle won🥷🏼 EU Nature Restoration Law. 6 points to know👇 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Yesterday we saw political leadership - coming by Austrian Minister Leonore Gewessler. Without her vote the law would not have passed by the EU Council. For this Ms Gewessler had to go against her own Government's position. “When asked in the future by my nieces, what I did when everything was at stake?; I want to be able to tell them: ‘I tried to support as much as I could." The EU Nature Restoration Law is a groundbreaking legislation aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems across Europe. Here are the 6 main points you should keep in mind: 1️⃣ Ambitious Targets: The law sets a target to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. This is a crucial step towards achieving the EU's climate and biodiversity goals. 2️⃣ Ecosystem Restoration: The law covers a wide range of ecosystems, including wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, lakes, and marine ecosystems. Member states must restore at least 30% of habitats in poor condition by 2030, 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. 3️⃣ Peatland Restoration: Recognizing the importance of peatlands as carbon sinks, the law requires member states to restore at least 30% of drained peatlands by 2030 (with at least a quarter rewetted), 40% by 2040, and 50% by 2050 (with at least one-third rewetted). 4️⃣ Urban Green Spaces: The law aims to prevent any net loss in the total national area of urban green spaces and urban tree canopy cover, promoting the integration of nature into cities. 5️⃣ River Restoration: Member states must restore at least 25,000 km of rivers into free-flowing rivers by 2030, removing human-made barriers and improving water connectivity. 6️⃣ Pollinator Protection: The law includes specific measures to protect and restore declining pollinator populations, such as butterflies and birds, which are crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring food security. Ações assim podem ajudar a mudar o comportamento sobre meio ambiente, algo que tem incomodado muito algumas pessoas em todo o mundo. O Parlamento Europeu tem bons discursos, mas pouca prática condizente com eles. Estou no Brasil, país que compra produtos químicos proibidos em países europeus, membros desse parlamento. No entanto, a indústria química europeia exporta para países como o Brasil agrotóxicos, ou produtos para a composição de agrotóxicos, proibidos nos países fabricantes na Europa, isso é a constatação de uma contradição muito grande causando uma série de problemas para outros países, enquanto isso, os europeus ficam parecem fazer a lição de casa, mas o que fazem é ganhar dinheiro com atividades duvidosas, com um único desejo: lucro financeiro. Como tais ações geram divisas para o país que vende o veneno, os governos que apenas querem arrecadar taxas e impostos, fazem de conta que o problema não é deles. Ao analisar essa atividade econômica, qualquer pessoa concluí que é mais fácil que o Parlamento fique quieto do que se manifestar internamente para que isso deixe de acontecer, pois, a interesse em fazer de conta que está tudo bem. Espero que algo mude nesse sentido, discursos e práticas precisam caminharem juntos.

Will moving more land into restoration remove farmland and increase dependency on imports? I don’t know enough about it… seems like progress and a win.
This is really great to see!
I love the goals; but as always, the Devil is in the details. If it comes with a huge tax hike that burdens the poor and benefits the rich, then Europe can keep it.
Sigh... hopefully this changes things 💚

Do they acknowledge the need for regenerative grazing to make this possible. Its not a maybe or a possibility. Its a must have. If they don't do this their ideals mean nothing and they will achieved very little.
