Good article in the FT on the Porthos #CCS project, now well underway in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 In 2024 there’s visible progress on large projects that make a material difference to reducing carbon emissions. Moomba CCS 🇦🇺, Northern Lights 🇳🇴 (with CO2 shipping) and Ravenna CCS 🇮🇹 (pilot) are all in the final stages before start-up. And in the UK 🇬🇧 the NEP and HyNet projects are getting ready for FID. There may be delays and surprises, but it’s real #momentum on returning carbon back to safe storage underground.

Financial Times' Malcolm Moore wrote a compelling story on the kickstart of European attempts at #CCS. In this read you find different perspectives on CCS, from cautiousness to the need to have such infrastructure in place for heavy industries that are currently hard to decarbonize. It amplifies how the Porthos project is set to proof its technology as a viable way to reduce emissions, as more CCS projects are planned. These CCS projects include Aramis CCS where CO2next's liquid CO2 terminal in the Port of #Rotterdam is crucial for building the much needed CO2 infrastructure. All eyes are on Porthos, the €1.3 billion Dutch carbon capture and storage (#CCS) hub, as the industry awaits a confidence-boosting CCS win. Porthos, which expects to sequester 37 million tonnes of #CO2 over 16 years, is being developed by the Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and EBN B.V. If Porthos proves successful, a second Dutch hub with ten times the capacity and backed by Shell and TotalEnergies called Aramis CCS will follow. #sustainability #energytransition #carbon #decarbonization #decarbonisation #carboncapture #ccus #carbonremoval #carbonsequestration #carbonstorage #netherlands

A Development Consent Order (DCO) has been issued by the UK Government for a project concerning the development of pipeline transport. This new project will be developed for use within the HyNet cluster. Being granted the DCO will allow the project to enter the next phase of its development and it will also cover the construction, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure. The pipeline is being built in order to enable the transport of Co2 as part of the HyNet cluster, in which Eni is the transportation and storage operator. This DCO is the first Anglo-Welsh cross border application that has been granted by the DESNZ, which has been made for a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) The article below displays the progress that is being made by the HyNet cluster and the positive effect that this will have on the carbon capture industry. This project highlights how large this industry is now becoming, as well as how important the use of carbon capture techniques and projects are within today's society. #NEW: This week, the European Commission awarded 80% of its cross-border infrastructure funding package to investments in the transportation and storage of #carbondioxide. The purpose is to develop the supply chain within the budding #carboncapture and storage (#CCS) industry. The EU deems #CCS essential to achieving #climate targets and aims to store at least 400 million tons of #carbondioxide per year by 2050. The EU also awarded EUR 157 million for #CCS infrastructure in the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where accessible offshore storage sites can provide up to over 400 million tons of #carbonstorage capacity. For this, several emitters would transport captured #carbon to the main onshore hub at Rotterdam port via shipping and onshore pipelines. The system is scheduled to start operations in early 2026, making Rotterdam the biggest #CCS infrastructure hub in the EU. Some very positive news for our member company Santos Ltd that will support the development of its major carbon capture and storage in South Australia. It's yet another endorsement for carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a technology that is critical for decarbonisation ambitions throughout Asia Pacific. Moomba will be capable of storing up to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 per annum and is set to offer storage for both Australian and international emissions. The necessity of cross border transport of CO2 to locations with suitable geology for storage is a major driver of ANGEA's groundbreaking Asia Pacific Cross Border Carbon Accreditation Study. Final investment decision on the first commercial-scale #ccs project in the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 A big step towards decarbonization of the great port of Rotterdam, and clear evidence that CO2 emitters, transportation & storage companies and government can work together to make ccs a reality. Next up, over to the UK where the #eastcoastcluster and #hynet are preparing for FID’s in 2024.

Exciting to see continued progress on what could be a highly significant carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub servicing customers in Australia, Japan, South Korea and across Asia - as well as opening up new economic opportunities for Timor Leste. ANGEA member companies, including Santos Ltd, are working globally to develop CCS solutions that can support nations across Asia in their attempts to balance economic growth with emissions reductions targets. CCS is a critical technology for Asia's climate aspirations, something we highlighted and explained in further detail in the recently released ANGEA Whitepaper. DNV has identified specific barriers hindering the transition to zero-emission fuels in its recent #maritimeimpact article on the Nordic Roadmap project. Our experts have found that the high cost of zero-emission bunker fuels, the low demand for green transport and the lack of bunkering infrastructure are roadblocks to the target of achieving net zero shipping by 2050. The Nordic Roadmap, which is led by DNV, brings together key stakeholders from across the region to plot a course for the transition to carbon-neutral fuels. 🚀 KN new energies strategy in action! The Carbon Capture and Storage (#CCS) project promoted by KN as part of CCS Baltic Consortium was acknowledged the status of Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union. KN plans to implement the #CO2 capture and project together with the German capital companies AB Akmenės cementas and SCHWENK Latvija operating in Latvia, and the international shipping companies Larvik Shipping AS and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. ✅ The companies established the “CCS Baltic Consortium” consortium last year, performed a project analysis, a feasibility study and submitted a project application to the EC for the 6th #PCI status. ⏭️ What‘s next? After the “CCS Baltic Consortium” project receives PCI status, detailed studies will continue and applications for EU funding will be submitted. It is expected that the project will attract large-scale EU investments to Lithuania and Latvia. It is estimated that the total investments can reach around 1.1-1.2 billion Euros. The final investment project is planned to be prepared at the end of 2026, and the CO2 capture and export operations will start in 2030. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dWQC4JrF
