▶ Purge Compounds ◀ Purging compounds, also called cleaning granulates, are primarily developed to reduce waste during color or material change and to shorten production downtime in the thermoplastics processing. When do we need to use a purging compound? ✅ Color change: When transitioning between one color to another, there’s a significant risk of contamination of the final product with the previous color ✅ Material change: A similar case to changing colors, but with added complexity due to different processing temperatures of the processed materials ✅ Removal of carbonized residues: They are formed by the degradation of polymer material when exposed to high temperatures for a long time. Most often, so-called "black dots" or "black specs." ✅ Shutdowns / Startups: The aim is to prevent the degradation of polymer materials in the chamber during shutdowns and startups Choosing a suitable type of purging compound is not an easy task and depends on various factors such as polymer type, MFI, barrel and hot runners temperatures and other factors. I am pleased to announce our recent publication in Industrial Crops and Products (Elsevier), in collaboration with researchers at Polytechnic University of Madrid #UPM: "Development and characterization of thermoplastic zein biopolymers plasticized with glycerol suitable for injection molding" Our group is strongly committed to the development of high environmentally-friendly materials that positively contribute to #SustainableDevelopment. This work explores the possibilities of new materials derived from #protein, specifically #zein, in the manufacturing of parts and components through #extrusion and #InjectionMolding processes, which can be scaled-up to #industry. This study demonstrates that, in addition to the widely used cast film processes for obtaining protein-based polymer films, it is possible to achieve #complex geometries through an initial compounding process of zein with glycerol by #extrusion, followed by #InjectionMolding. This expands the potential applications of these materials. Consequently, we take a step forward in reducing the #CarbonFootprint and in utilizing #NaturalResources for the development of industrial products in the plastics sector, with a positive effect on the transition of linear to #CircularEconomy. We invite #collaborations with professionals and researchers interested in exploring the potential of these innovative #biobased, and #biodegradable protein-based polymers.
