Operational Excellence is a foreign word in Family Offices! Sounds like provocative- could be! That’s just a spotlight from a conversation with a Principal and Entrepreneurial Wealthcreator! He was expressing his perspective: „Look at the most Gen1 Family Offices, very few have clear idea what they actually doing. The dumbest thing what the most Entrepreneurs doing is, they don’t invest in Sectors they are coming from, they understand very well! Very few have a clear Investmentphilosphy and in many many cases, they have hired a Family Office without any sense in strategic thinking! And the funny thing is often the term -if you have seen one Family Office, you have seen one family office - when we stop this kind of nonsense? Why we treat us as snowflakes? Often this kind of nonsense comes from Family Officers and I can’t understand this. My advice to some of my colleagues is often, in the case your Family Officer approach you with this snowflake nonsense- fire him immediately! What we need instead is a discussion about operational excellence in Family Offices! In Most Family Offices, Operational Excellence is a foreign word. We need more educational platforms instead these pay per play family office „conferences“ - these kind of conferences don’t deliver value - period!“ 💥 Boom - that was a statement, which is rare! 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵? When we interviewed three family office market leaders, running a family office with a comparable level of rigor as a small ASX listed company was seen as the preferred way to avoid the pitfalls of mixing family (and friends) with wealth creation. For example: - Appropriate remuneration and carry to attract dynamic executives. - Using the right outsourced functions for the right role, aiming to avoid duplication and establish accountability. - Identifying gaps in networks to source and analyze investment opportunities. A surprise for many family office founders is the 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 needed to manage people and relationships. A lack of discipline was identified by our panel as the most dominant reason behind the failure of family offices. Instead, many family offices are established as a: 1. place to receive advice, and act on only pieces of it; 2. means to find a purpose; or 3. very expensive bookkeeping operation.
