Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been awarded a $4.6 million contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for dynamic, airborne missions as part of its Artificial Intelligence Reinforcements (AIR) program. This project aims to provide advanced Modeling and Simulation (M&S) approaches and dominant AI agents for live, multi-ship, beyond visual range (BVR) missions. It is a critical step in prioritizing and investing in breakthrough technologies for national security and to meet the evolving needs of customers. DARPA’s AIR program will improve the government-provided baseline models’ speed and predictive performance to better match how the Department of Defense’s systems perform in the real world. During the 18-month period of performance, Lockheed Martin will apply AI and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to create surrogate models of aircraft, sensors, electronic warfare and weapons within dynamic and operationally representative environments #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gGcwz5za

Yesterday, Jade Baranski joined a panel with representatives from Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics Mission Systems to make the case that the #AI-powered future the United States Department of Defense needs to deter and win conflict requires investing in #data today. To get the right solutions into the hands of warfighter and align their needs into a clear demand signal to the greater RTD&E enterprise at speed, we will need to connect the dots faster than human abilities currently allow unaided by AI. This is the future VISION users are building ⚡ #AFAColorado

The French #Navy is turning to #AI to help #submarines detect enemy vessels in a growing sea of underwater sounds. As more vessels have powerful passive acoustic sensors, the amount of data collected for analysis is growing exponentially. In the early 2000s, a sonar operator could see around 20 kilometers and would monitor 10 simultaneous acoustic contacts, by 2020 that had increased to more than 200 kilometers and a hundred tracks. The artificial intelligence model is able to distinguish the type of boat, propulsion system, propeller speed and even the number of prop blades. Sifting through 12 days of acoustic data that might take an expert more than 80 days, can be done by #AI in about 5 hours. | https://bit.ly/4aFEWGA ⚓ #submersibles #AUV #UUV #USV #defenseindustry #nationalsecurity

“I believe that optimal solutions are generated not by individuals but by teams.” Marie Safar Postma, Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at Tilburg University will be conducting research in the context of the STEADFAST project into swarms of small drones that can operate (semi-)autonomously under human supervision. These so-called Human-Swarm Teams are applied in military as well as civilian missions. “In this project, we focus on collaboration between humans and AI,” Šafář-Postma explains. “In situations in which military staff and first responders have to quickly get a picture, whether it is about a terrorist attack or a natural disaster, swarms of small drones with specific characteristics can quickly and safely gather that information for them.” Read more about it: https://lnkd.in/e9dPcnr6
