I am proud to be endorsed by the 32nd Dems! They support my focus on accountability and transparency, especially around school closures. School closures should be the very last resort after exhausting all other options to balance the budget. School closures have a deep and lasting impact to students and families. Before considering closing schools, I am asking the Seattle School District to: 1. Perform a district-wide independent audit to ensure dollars are being spent with fiscal accountability. 2. Implement an stronger community engagement process that listens to families and communities furthest from educational opportunities. 3. Listen to families and communities that want to keep their neighborhood schools open.

We know higher education is one of the most important factors in overcoming youth homelessness. That's why Covenant House has endorsed a new bipartisan bill that would help lower barriers to attending college for young people experiencing homelessness. Among other changes, the Higher Education Access and Success for Homeless and Foster Youth Act of 2024 would give housing-insecure students priority for federal work-study jobs, spots in school housing during breaks, and in-state tuition at state schools. Everyone deserves a chance at higher education, and the support offered in this bill would help ambitious young people at Covenant House achieve their goals and dreams. “If we care about providing kids a stable shot at going to the same school for several years and meeting role models and students and guidance counselors who can help them reach their full potential, then we have to provide their families a stable place to live.” — Matthew Desmond, author of “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” A family’s living conditions can play a significant role in a child’s educational opportunities and achievements. Families who spend too much of their income on housing often must make critical trade-offs, including forgoing educational and enrichment opportunities for themselves and their children. For children, frequent or unplanned moves will often negatively impact achievement. A stable place to call home provides a secure environment and adequate space to study and think. Better lighting, room for a small desk, a parent’s ability to devote time to helping with homework — all of these can lead to improved academic outcomes. Putting down roots, renovating property and investing in communities also helps entire neighborhoods grow and become safer for everyone. Neighborhoods where residents stay put for a long time tend to be associated with lower crime rates, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Communities and networks of support form whenever residents come together to build and improve the places they call home.
