"Ricky Miller, cofounder and publisher of the U.K. small press Avery Hill Publishing, signed on with Comics Plus as a way to raise awareness among U.S. readers. Miller would like to see more Avery Hill titles in U.S. libraries, but that’s a challenge with physical books. Digital publishing allows the company to offer its books to a wide audience and makes it easier for readers to discover them, including early works by Tillie Walden and Zoe Thorogood." via Publishers Weekly While too many traditional publishers still remain leery of ebooks and libraries, a steadily increasing number of comics and manga publishers value the combination of discovery and revenue Comics Plus [LibraryPass] provides — partly because their print editions still offer a unique experience for readers and/or collectors. Miller gets it. #comics #manga #libcomix #ReadAllTheComics https://lnkd.in/ekqXGfu2

I recently read an insightful article that highlighted some promising trends in the US print book market. According to Circana BookScan, May 2024 saw a 5% increase in print book sales compared to May 2023. This positive trend is further supported by the Association of American Publishers' report, which showed a remarkable 18.3% revenue increase across all categories in April 2024. This surge is driven by several factors, including successful retail promotions and a strong Mother’s Day. Notably, adult fiction led the way, contributing 70% of the gains, with thrillers and romance genres showing significant growth. For Life to Paper Publishing, this is incredibly encouraging news as we gear up for our exciting fall 2024 releases. The rising interest in print books and the growing popularity of diverse genres reinforce our commitment to bringing captivating non-fiction stories to our readers. We're thrilled to see such positive momentum in the industry and are more motivated than ever to deliver outstanding titles that resonate with our audience. Stay tuned for our upcoming releases – we can't wait to share them with you! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gKgc7MPN #Publishing #NonFiction #BookTrends #LifeToPaperPublishing #BookMarket #Fall2024Releases

A fantastic analysis from Rob Salkowitz: "One of the most disappointing tidbits in the sales charts is the complete disappearance of DC and Marvel, which together account for under 10% of the total non-manga book market in 2023. Hibbs has a pretty complete discussion of this in his write-up, but there’s one observation I would add. Collecting story arcs as trade books used to represent a reasonable way for publishers (and creators) to recoup the costs of ongoing and limited series that went into a sales decay after the first issue. The predictability of these moves may have hurt in the medium-term by inculcating a "wait for the trade" mentality among readers, but in the long run, having these stories in print and widely available was a selling point." https://lnkd.in/eWWQcGtQ #comics #comicbooks #comicbookindustry

Sourcebooks was announced as the “top publisher of trade paperback bestsellers last year” in a Publishers Weekly 📚 article entitled, "Big Five Domination of Adult Bestseller Lists Slipped in 2023." By their calculations, Sourcebooks had 29 titles on the trade paperback list, occupying 213 positions of the 1,040 positions and accounting for 20.5% of all trade paperback bestseller slots. That’s more than one fifth of the paperback fiction list! 🌟 The article includes a "further note on Sourcebooks’ 2023 trade paperback performance, 23 of its bestsellers were published by its Bloom Books imprint, which accounted for 195 trade paperback slots." New Book Review! A Cultural History of the Punisher: Marvel Comics and the Politics of Vengeance ‘I detest The Punisher. I mean, I ordinarily have no use for the character. But this book just arrived in my mailbox and I'm already into the second chapter. Excellent writing: trenchant, provocative, at times jaw-dropping. The arguments are needle-sharp, the contexts surprising yet persuasive. Whoa. Worcester manages to avoid defensiveness, righteous dismissal, handwringing, and the oh so many pitfalls that could easily trip up a project like this. In the process, he makes the whole "Marvel Universe" look different.’ –Professor Charles Hatfield (coauthor of Comics Studies: A Guidebook and author of Hands of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby) Available in hardback and paperback here 👉 https://lnkd.in/efyfZ3EM #BookReview
