Informaticien et ingénieur, Sethuraman Panchanathan est le 15e directeur de la National Science Foundation (NSF) des États-Unis, un organisme fédéral indépendant qui dispose d’un budget annuel de 9 milliards de dollars pour faire progresser la recherche scientifique, l’innovation technologique et l’enseignement des STIM. Il y a été nommé en 2019 par le président des États-Unis et confirmé à l’unanimité par le Sénat américain en 2020. Les contributions scientifiques de M. Panchanathan ont permis de réaliser des avancées dans les domaines de l’informatique multimédia centrée sur la personne, des interfaces utilisateurs haptiques et de l’informatique ubiquitaire, et d’ainsi améliorer la qualité de vie des personnes aux capacités différentes. L’homme de science a également fait progresser l’apprentissage machine pour les applications multimédias et la conception de processeurs médias. Membre de la National Academy of Engineering et de prestigieux organismes scientifiques, comme la National Academy of Inventors et l’American Association for the Advancement of Science, il continue de stimuler l’innovation et d’inspirer la relève en sciences et en génie. - Continuing our #uOGrad24 series, Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan is an honorary doctorate we are awarding this year. The Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan is a computer scientist and engineer who serves as the 15th director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Nominated by the President of the United States in 2019 and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2020, Panchanathan leads this $9 billion independent federal agency dedicated to advancing scientific discovery, technological innovation and STEM education. Panchanathan’s scientific contributions have advanced human-centred multimedia computing, haptic user interfaces and ubiquitous computing technologies,  to enhance the quality of life of individuals with different abilities. He has also contributed to machine learning for multimedia applications and to media processor design. Recognized as a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of prestigious scientific organizations, including the National Academy of Inventors and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Panchanathan continues to drive innovation and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
