The rise in retail theft has become so severe, many people now refer to it as an epidemic. How can retailers avoid being driven out of business by shoplifters and curb the abuse thrown at their staff? Having an effective way to control the flow of people in and out of the premises can be a real deterrent to anyone intent on stealing stock or behaving badly. We take a look in more detail in our latest blog, which you can read here: https://hubs.ly/Q02D8Dpb0

Anybody who follows my Linked-In posts over the last six months or so knows that I have championed an industry push to tackle shoplifting and retail theft - certainly here in the UK. The crime - for it is a crime - has, to my view gotten out of hand and is now endangering the futures of already hard-pressed retail businesses. Just as importantly, staff safety, is increasingly under threat. So I'm delighted to be taking part in RETAIL THEFT - that is in an online discussion on the matter tomorrow (Tuesday) Sponsored by UrbanOvation and The Future of Retail Committee, this discussion which will include industry security experts, Corin Dennison and Robert “Rob” Cordero, and moderated by Linda Johansen-James of International Retail Group and Chris Igwe of Chris Igwe International. This discussion will focus on how we can tackle this escalating issue and; ✳ Which legal measures are in place to combat theft? ✳ How are retailers internally handling this situation? ✳ Internal theft among employees remains a concern. The session is looking forward to hearing thoughts, concerns and anything you have done to combat retail theft during our discussion and what is and should happen to tackle this and what happens if we don't! Please click or go to the link below to register for this timely discussion which will take place tomorrow (24 October 2023) at 17:00 CET | 4 pm GMT+1 (BST) | 8 am PST | 11 am EST. https://lnkd.in/gxFKzWkc #retailtheft #holidayseason #theft #inventorycontrol #paneldiscussion #holidayseason #securityexperts #mallsecurity #conciergesecurity #grocery #shoppingcenters #shoppingcentres #shrinkage #crime #urbandesign #retail #lossprevention #security #HMGovernment #HMCourts #CPS #Crownprosecutionservice #RetailTrust #shoplifting #shoplifters #stolen2order #retailbrand #brandprotection

I attended a great webinar today, "Cracking Down On Retail Theft" hosted by the Loss Prevention Foundation and presented by CIS (Creatively Impacting Shrink). "Shoplifting is now considered the number one major property crime in the United States. It has profound effects as well: the higher retail prices of commodities to make up for the losses, significant loss of local and state tax revenues and legal costs, reduced hours and loss of community jobs in the event of store closures, and with more brazen shoplifters - possible loss of life to guards and loss prevention professionals."

What causes more damage to a retail operation, external (shoplifting/robbery) or internal (employee) theft? By a nearly 3-to-1 margin, retailers say that INTERNAL THEFT IS MORE EXPENSIVE than external theft at their establishments. Shoplifting might steal the limelight, but the cold hard reality is that employee theft accounts for almost half of all retail loss. “Often, the employees who embezzle are TRUSTED MEMBERS of a company’s team…It can be incredibly devastating to find out they have been ripping you off.” Under ringing – In this scenario the cashier uses the Point of Sale to ring up an item at less than its listed price, collects the full amount and pockets the difference. Retailers must address #shrinkage in a way that lessens not only their immediate financial losses but also its effects on consumers, staff, and their brand. This necessitates a comprehensive loss prevention plan that successfully tackles the external theft, internal fraud, and operational faults that are the three main drivers of shrinkage. ✂📦🛍🛒 https://lnkd.in/dRUCYhny

When a retailer invests in gates for their store, they are not just protecting their stock. They are also creating a welcoming space where staff can work without fear of assault and customers to visit and shop in safety.
