Firefighting theory encompasses several key principles and practices aimed at extinguishing fires safely and effectively. Some foundational elements include: 1. **Fire Triangle**: Understanding the components necessary for fire: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Removing any of these elements can extinguish a fire. 2. **Classes of Fire**: Fires are categorized based on the type of fuel involved. Classes include Class A (ordinary combustibles like wood and paper), Class B (flammable liquids and gases), Class C (electrical fires), Class D (flammable metals), and Class K (cooking oils and fats). 3. **Fire Behavior**: Recognizing how fires spread and behave under various conditions, such as ventilation, fuel type, and environmental factors like wind. 4. **Extinguishing Agents**: Different types of extinguishing agents are used based on the type of fire. For example, water is effective for Class A fires, while CO2 or dry chemical extinguishers are used for Class B and C fires. 5. **Fire Suppression Tactics**: Strategies for controlling and extinguishing fires, including techniques like direct attack (applying extinguishing agent directly to the flames), indirect attack (cooling surrounding surfaces to prevent fire spread), and ventilation (removing heat, smoke, and gases to improve visibility and access). 6. **Safety Protocols**: Prioritizing the safety of firefighters and civilians, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining situational awareness, and following established protocols and procedures. 7. **Incident Command System (ICS)**: Organizational structure and protocols used to manage fire incidents, ensuring effective coordination among responders and resources. These principles form the basis for firefighting operations, guiding firefighters in their efforts to save lives and protect property during emergencies. Emergency Communications: Fire Service Author, Advocate for Public Safety Dispatchers' Physical and Emotional Health
Dispatcher-Added Safety is the title of an article I wrote for Fire Engineering Magazine in December 1996. In it, I listed seven ways in which dispatchers can contribute to the protection of field forces responding to incidents. I will publish one on LinkedIn each week for the next seven weeks. Although the original article is almost three decades old, these are still good dispatching practices. I am interested to see what today's younger dispatchers can add to this list of important safety practices. #911dispatcher #dispatcheraddedsafety #publicsafetydispatcher

Do you know if your Fire and safety plans are up to date? It is crucial to have up-to-date Fire and safety plans in place to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. The US Coast Guard has introduced new fire safety regulations for passenger vessels, requiring boat operators to install fire detection systems and extinguishers, establish procedures for handling hazardous items, and ensure proper escape routes are available. Inadequate inspection and maintenance of onboard fire detection systems, as well as insufficient crew training, were contributing factors to a previous incident off the coast of California in 2019. Therefore, it is imperative to have proper Fire and safety plans tailored to your vessel. ACMA is fully equipped to assist you in creating new plans or updating existing ones that comply with current codes and regulations. With our help, your vessel will pass inspection and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Don't take any chances with the safety of your passengers and crew - contact us today to ensure your Fire and safety plans are up-to-date and effective. I had the privilege to attend European Civil Aviation Conference CASE II Project course on Best Practices for National Auditors Level 2. The main objective of this course was to familiarise national auditors with best practices in aviation security audit and inspection techniques, and to further strengthen their competencies in the implementation of compliance monitoring activities at a national level.

Active and Passive Fire Protection Measures General principles The operator should be able to demonstrate that it has an effective and practical plan for the containment and fighting of fires on its process installations. The following site factors should be considered in determining whether active and passive fire protection measures are required: -fire hazard posed by substance; -toxicity of substances and the smoke produced; -inventory size; -frequency of hazardous operations; -distance to other hazardous installations; -available access to fight fire; -fire fighting capability of on site emergency response team; -response time of nearest fire brigade; -resources available to fire brigade. #FireProtection #ActiveFireProtection #PassiveFireProtection https://lnkd.in/ehH6iTyD
