We’ve been working with Channel 5 on a documentary to create a buzz about the secret life of bees. Our Head of Environment and Sustainability Jason Brooker BSc (Hons) MSc MIEMA CEnv today met up with Bee-Friendly Trust’s Dr Luke Dixon at Blackfriars station. Here, by the South Bank entrance, we’ve jointly created the first of 100 homes for nature with a bee hotel and pollen-friendly plants. One in three mouthfuls of our food depend on pollinators such as bees. Our railways create green corridors for wildlife which we’re supporting through our biodiversity strategy. The primetime documentary, which is fronted by TV environmentalist Steve Backshall, is likely to be broadcast at the end of this year.

Did you know? - what butterflies can tell you about your direct environment?… During the most recent biodiversity monitoring event I attended with Laura Kooijman from idverde NL at Wienerberger Deutschland, we spotted this amazing creature 🦋. This beautiful peacock butterfly, although often hidden, displays its eye-like patterns to deter predators. The lifespan of a butterfly depends on its species and environment, with some living only a few days. The pretty fella we observed at the Wienerberger Deutschland plant appeared to have reached the end of its lifecycle, evident from its tattered wings. However, there is no need for concern! Because It has left behind a legacy. Before reaching their final stage, butterflies lay eggs to reproduce, carefully hiding them in rolled-up leaves. And now, one of the coolest facts about butterflies: Did you know that spotting butterflies is an indicator of a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem? Butterflies typically gather in areas with a balanced environment, making them excellent environmental ambassadors! 🦋 #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalMonitoring #PeacockButterfly #EcosystemHealth #Sustainability #WildlifeConservation #EnvironmentalAwareness #NatureLovers #GreenInitiatives

That's a fascinating topic! Nature's wonder animals play a significant role in shaping our planet's environment. Here are some examples: 1. Beavers: Their dam-building activities create wetlands, habitats for diverse species, and help regulate water flows. 2. Elephants: As seed dispersers and forest gardeners, they maintain healthy ecosystems and promote biodiversity. 3. Wolves: By preying on herbivores, they maintain vegetation balance and indirectly support healthy ecosystems. 4. Sea Otters: They prey on sea urchins, which helps maintain kelp forests and supports marine biodiversity. 5. Vultures: As scavengers, they clean up carcasses, preventing disease spread and maintaining ecosystem hygiene. These animals, among many others, have a profound impact on their respective ecosystems, demonstrating the intricate interconnectedness of nature.

Did you know that the Eastern Plains Landscape (EPL) has over 50 native tree species, serving as vital nectar sources for Mondulkiri wild honey bees? This discovery highlights the region's rich biodiversity and the essential role these trees play in local ecosystems. This is, according to the WWF, to support the hive of wild bees. https://smpl.is/92fwv

For the past 8 or so months, I've had the privilege of working on building a toolkit that advocates for nature. We are aiming to go from an age of extraction to an age of regeneration The Lexicon We worked with leading thinkers and doers. All together, we gathered the story of 25 case studies on the ground doing conservation, afforestation, decarbonization, and much more. We built this framework that takes all the complexities of impact and explains it in the most simple and intuitive terms: Air, Water, Soil, Biodiversity, Equity, and Carbon. Did you know it's Biodiversity month? Biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of life, including species and ecosystems. Without this variety, ecological systems such as water filtration and nutrient cycling could not function 🌱 Farmers and other agricultural land managers can undertake a range of actions to protect, restore or enhance natural assets. In doing so, farmers can help protect our unique wildlife.

👏refreshing to have some good news for the planet.. “It is estimated by the Future of Nature and Business report's that a nature positive economy can unlock $10 trillion of business opportunities through the transformation of our food, infrastructure, and energy economic systems.” Takeaway: Invest your time/money into practices, programs and products that hold your company accountable with measureable and transparent impact data! 📈🌲
Good news! Today, a new initiative known as the Nature Positive Initiative (NPI) was launched, representing a significant step towards global alignment on the definition, integrity, and use of the term ‘nature positive’. The NPI will help to provide a clear framework and unified vision for contributing to biodiversity preservation and restoration, ultimately ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
