Founder of ESG for In-house | Creator of the Minimum Viable Report for ESG | I help in-house counsel meet client and investor expectations for ESG without overspending.
"I want to work in sustainability, but I don't know how to break in." I love hearing from so many people who are committed to building a career in sustainability. It's true that many employers look to fill sustainability positions with people from the industry. But +80% of the work you will do in sustainability is the same as the work in any other business. (excluding actual scientists) Data, analytics, accounting, project management, collaboration . . . etc. We need more people with strong skills in these areas to make change. If you want to be in sustainability and you are not there yet - focus on building a strong, transferable, professional skillset wherever you are at. If you are hiring for sustainability roles, challenge your assumption that you need someone with industry experience. We need more people in the tent to power the transition. Sustainability isn't about adding a service or product. It is about internalizing it in our modus operandi and value creation. One of the most comprehensive changes in our views upon sustainability this year will be this, as this post illustrates. Thanks for sharing! ✨ #sustainablebusiness #sustainagility #systemsthinking

Finally! 💯 Someone who charted this perfectly, as I usually take some time to navigate with new interest on the definition of "Sustainability" jobs 👨🎓 It's essential to understand that it's not just about having green jobs, but also "greening" our jobs. Every role has a specific part of going "Green"! But also more critically, sustainability isn't all about mitigating environmental damage (sure it is generally for everyone), but it's about understanding what's material to your company's journey in "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future needs".

How do you make every job a sustainability job? Last week, Today Do This launched a free guide to answer that very question, and it seems to have struck a chord. We’ve had an overwhelming number of requests for it. It condenses five years of experience, learning and insights from our work enabling thousands of employees at some of the world’s biggest companies to connect the skills and responsibilities of their job with the social and environmental issues the business needs to address. We wrote it for: 💼 Chief Sustainability Officers, Impact Directors and Heads of ESG ✊ People heading up internal champions groups and ERGs ✨ Anyone wanting to make sustainability work in their company Because *everyone*, whatever their job description, whichever department they’re in, has the power to effect positive change. And *every business*, whatever it does and however it hopes to make a positive impact, can’t rely on one small team with limited resources to make it happen. It takes *everyone*. If you’d like to request the guide, there’s a link in the comments for that, or just send me a message. If you know someone who’d find the guide useful, please do tag them in a comment to let them know. 👋 Thanks for helping me spread the word!

Consultant - Recruiting marketing, digital, communications and fundraising talent in the charity sector.
What soft skills are required for a career in sustainability? 🌱 Read an article this morning (link in comments) about this topic and I think it gives some really useful high-level tips for those working in the space. When chatting with candidates, especially within consulting, one challenge that often arises is getting the messaging right with clients around Net Zero. Reading the room is a great start, as there is a general discourse and confusion around timelines of what actions we need to take and when. This ultimately depends on what industry and business you are working with, as some of the larger consulting firms are shifting towards shorter-term regulatory wins as opposed to laying a longer-term foundation. A combination of both is essential to assure progress, but hurdling red tape is unlikely to stop the ice caps from melting. Keen to hear some thoughts from my network on this. Please let me know below! 😎

In our recent sustainability report based on a selection of companies from within the chemicals, nutrition, and life sciences sectors, the data revealed that a high proportion of sustainability leaders were also responsible for other business areas (46%). The additional business areas were: Technical/R&D 48% Communication & policy 24% Commercial/Business management 14% HSE, Operations & Supply chain 24% Human Resources 10% This figure raises a question as to whether the sustainability title has been created to genuinely focus on increasing ESG initiatives, or whether firms have had to create the role because of investor pressure. It is positive to see that of the individuals who have taken on the new sustainability roles, the majority are focused on technology as this will ultimately be a key driver towards sustainable innovations. Very few employees are also responsible for commercial businesses areas which we were surprised to see. If you’re working within any of these sectors and would like our support for your sustainability strategy and recruitment needs, contact a member of the Miramar Global team today. #sustainability #ESG #sustainabilityreporting
