Invaluable foresight for staying ahead. 🎧 Exploring the Balancing Mechanism with Claire Dykta (Head of Markets at ESO) A great listen for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the dynamics and mechanisms that ensure the stability of the energy grid. Highly recommend the Energy Basics series from The Energy Transition Show with Chris Nelder, for folks who need that sort of 30,000 foot view of the energy sector. From some electricity & power plant science fundamentals to an economist's overview of modern power markets, this podcast series covered some serious... ground. Har har. This series also helped clarify confusion about domain terminology, which is just like every other domain... full of 3-letter acronyms and "well, we used to call it THIS, but now we call it THAT always... except in this case over here, etc." The 20-minutes-per-module structure also made it easy to fit into any given day. The recent 🎙Redefining Energy Minutes podcast with Laurent Segalen and Gerard Reid highlighted the annual presentation pack prepared by Nat Bullard. During this episode, they discussed slide 186 in the presentation and this was about the amount of Watt Hours per request from a basic Google request through to an AI-powered Google request. Challenging times for AI with a clear limiting factor middle-term: the available energy at datacenter sites... Being a local energy producer even partially (roof top PV etc..) or temporarily (BESS) will be key for data centers to postpone the network congestion and still enable growth. #datacenter #BESS #PV #grid

If you haven't come across the excellent "Volts" podcast from david roberts, it's well worth a listen for the latest takes on energy policy and transitioning to a carbon-free economy. This episode on Distributed Energy Resources - or DERs - is particularly interesting at a time when energy demand is rising and project interconnection waits are getting longer: https://lnkd.in/eTBmtuV6 A few eye-opening points raised: ⬆ Peak load growth could be 12x what utilities previously estimated. ⚠ Existing generation sources have less capacity to handle this growth than expected and have lead times too long to scale up and meet demand. ⏱ In 2007, interconnection times to hook up to the grid stood at 1.7 years. In 2022, that time is closer to 5 years for traditional generation sources. ⚡ Transmission expansion is also decelerating at a time when hockey stick growth is required to meet 2050 net-zero targets. Alongside David, Duncan S. Campbell of Scale Microgrids does a great job unpacking how we got here and why #DERs provide a valuable solution to manage anticipated load growth from data centers, electric vehicles, and electrified heating systems. #electrification #distributedenergy #batterystorage

Excellent podcast! This interview with Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, and David Tudor, CEO of Associated Electric Cooperative, digs into the issues facing America’s electrical grids as the push for renewable energy becomes stronger. US electrical grids deliver astounding amounts of energy with very high-reliability rates. However, some electric cooperatives are beginning to raise concerns and develop solutions as our grid experiences pressures associated with new clean energy infrastructure. Grateful to Shayle Kann for inviting me on his Catalyst podcast to discuss interconnection reform - as he notes, "interconnection is rapidly becoming the single biggest barrier to the energy transition, full stop." This is a byzantine subject, and Shayle masterfully guided our conversation through the current state of interconnection, FERC Order 2023, ERCOT's performance and practices versus non-ERCOT markets, and immediate next steps, in under 40 minutes.
