Agencies who want to establish or grow a high performing paid social team, here's 3 things to focus on: 👥 Hire & develop specialist talent. There's a general trend towards generalist teams but even for agencies that want to go down that road, you NEED a paid social specialist to help you grow that function. It's a totally different skillset to paid search or programmatic and if you want someone to be able to effectively deliver on and know about every social channel, that is a full time job. It's not something you can blu-tack on to a PPC Manager's job, if you want it to be done well. ⚙️ Execute media buying fundamentals flawlessly. I'd say media buying is barely the most important part of the skillset of a practitioner these days but getting it right is still important. Having the proper systems and processes in place to ensure 100% accuracy is fundamental to keeping clients satisfied. This needs coupling with a clear playbook for experimentation and optimisation. It's super easy to run out of ideas so this is a really important part of the process. 💬 Have a compelling proposition. You can't just "offer Facebook ads" any more. There are too many agencies doing that. We're sadly seeing mass commoditisation of paid social which is harming the outcomes being delivered to clients. The agencies that will succeed and grow with the channel will have a clear, integrated proposition that takes it seriously and sees its value as a broad reaching growth channel. Not just a "chuck the budget into Advantage+ Shopping because Meta told us to" approach. A core part of The Paid Social Hub is improving agency side capability as I strongly believe this helps the industry as a whole. This article highlights a frustration I've experienced all of 2023 as a paid social marketer -- short sighted hiring managers who are looking for "conversion focused paid social" hires, rather than those with strong upper to middle funnel experience who understand MMM and where search plays a role. Of course, immediate sales goals are going to be the squeaky wheel, but that does not translate into loyalty and CLV.
