New paper alert! '𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼–𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀.' https://lnkd.in/geP-syF2 Ever considered how invisible food webs exist within individuals? We hypothesise an impact of microbial interactions within individual hosts on larger ecological networks, suggesting that the health and behaviour of macro-organisms are intricately linked to their microbiomes, thereby influencing broader food web dynamics. Our colloquial name for this is '𝗡𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀'. Understanding the nested nature of food webs could lead to a more holistic approach to studying and managing ecosystems. Today, in the FT's article "Why nature's future undeprins the future of business", Paula DiPerna, author of Pricing the Priceless, compares nature with workers stating " we're getting away with not paying nature, the ultimate worker". How do we fix that ? By looking at what mechanisms could set a price to what needs to be protected. For the private sector it could be understanding the role Biodiversity Credits could play in doing so. The World Economic Forum in partnership with McKinsey & Company, have embarked a few of us in exploring drivers for biodiversity credits and estimating the scale of demand. Our main guest is Geoffry Mwangi Wambungu, Chief Research Scientist at the world's first REDD project, the Kasigau Corridor REDD Project. He explains what social scientists mean by "theory of change" and why he believes "co-benefits" is a misnomer in natural climate solutions. He prefers the term "core benefits."
