I hope you all get to experience what I am feeling with the launch of the GimmeFive™ Fund at some point with your work.
It's really easy to have the blur of a project calendar flash by and never stop to appreciate how something comes to be. I was curious about how to get here with GimmeFive, so... I dug into my emails.
At the end of 2021, I started scheming through a scholarship fund for SproutFive alums. Every email I sent had the same line: "I have been exploring ways in which we can continue to support the educational trajectory of our littles—well beyond the first five years!" That was the North Star. However, I was pointed in a hundred directions.
In June of 2022, Levi Thies and Kathleen Husted started thinking with me about reducing poverty through early education, and at this point, the idea of alum scholarships shifted to 529s. The team presented the idea of a $500 contribution to 529s to our Board. Along the way, this 529 idea became a strategic plan goal (with a name devised in some communications marketing power session with Scott Milburn and Mary Cusick).
It was in November 2022 that things took off. Angi Lee connected me to her neighbor who happened to work at the Ohio Tuition Trust to talk about 529s—As an aside, at this point, I still thought we would be establishing a Nonprofit account with CollegeAdvantage. I was wrong. Caregiver accounts that SproutFive contributes to through UGift would have to be the way to go. Now, this needed a plan and a program.
I fly out to NYC and learn from the successes and opportunities with NYC Kids RISE.
Around the same time, Patrick "P.J." Gamble, Jr connects us with Kelly Clifford Riehl and Maggie Walters at Installed Building Products. IBP felt like the perfect partner for GimmeFive—mission alignment, community commitment, and passion. Internally, we knew we wanted to keep this project with one partner until launch, so we took a chance and started sharing the initiative with someone outside the organization for the first time.
IBP not only came to the table with a commitment to launch the GimmeFive program, but they surprised us first by sharing that the Edwards Companies would match their gift. During the launch prep, they surprised us again by pledging $100,000 a year for three years to—a $460,000 total commitment. The confidence they gifted me that this program is good was equally if not more valuable than the dollar amount. It is life-changing. It is worth the time, energy, and boldness it took to get it off the ground.
So again, I hope you all get to experience what I am feeling with the launch of the GimmeFive™ Fund at some point with your work—the excitement, the relief, the joy, the pride.
Thank you to everyone who helped transform a wild idea into a groundbreaking program.
You can join us in supporting the launch of the GimmeFive Fund. Consider contributing to GimmeFive by visiting http://gimmefivefund.org/.
SproutFive is excited to announce a new initiative that will help our littles with a strong financial foundation in addition to the strong developmental foundation that they receive in our program.
The SproutFive Campaign donates up to $500 per year into an Ohio 529 savings plan for littles enrolled at SproutFive.
This is an opportunity to support our families beyond the classroom and after our kiddos move onto kindergarten and we wouldn't be able to do it without the support of Installed Building Products and Edwards Companies. With their support and yours, we'll be able to give our kids a hand in going to college.
