Last week, our staff gathered at VE Macy Park for a picnic to celebrate the formation of our newly merged entity, Greater Mental Health of New York!   For nearly 80 years, The Mental Health Association of Westchester and The Mental Health Association of Rockland have promoted the mental and emotional well-being of children, adolescents and adults throughout Westchester and Rockland counties and beyond. With our merger, we are excited to introduce you to something #Greater- and truly believe that we are #BetterTogether. Our merger enables us to provide an expanded range of programs, services, and support to our community. ✨July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! ✨ Established in 2008 in honor of mental health advocate Bebe Moore Campbell, Minority Mental Health Month highlights the unique mental health challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color in order to continue working towards a future where mental health care is accessible and equitable to all. Losing someone to suicide is unlike any other loss. Along with suicide prevention trainings and services, our highly trained staff offer Postvention Support Services to help facilitate healing from the grief and distress of suicide loss as well as mitigate other negative effects of exposure to suicide. Yesterday, Greater Mental Health of New York commemorated Juneteenth with a vibrant celebration at our Valley Cottage location. The event featured southern cuisine from Brother’s Barbecue and an outdoor gathering, where we were honored to welcome speakers and Rockland County natives: - Annquette Mackey, Program Manager for Transitional Services at The Center for Safety and Change - Quantah Moor (born Tammy Eleazer), a spoken word artist - Dr. Weldon McWilliams IV, Professor of Black Studies at SUNY New Paltz We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our speakers, staff, and program participants for making this event memorable. Special appreciation goes to our Rockland-based Diversity, Inclusion, Awareness, and Learning for Ongoing Unity and Equity (DIALOGUE) committee for organizing this exceptional celebration, whose efforts help to create a more inclusive environment that positively impacts our agency and the communities we serve.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect for Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, and Orange counties from Tuesday, June 18th at 12 p.m. until Wednesday, June 19th at 8 p.m. During this period, heat index values are expected to reach between 95 and 100 degrees, with high temperatures to continue until the end of the week. High temperatures pose significant health risks, and at Greater Mental Health, we understand that the extreme temperatures this week may have an impact on specific populations, especially those who may be taking certain antidepressant, antipsychotic, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and blood pressure medications. Congratulations to Barbara Morgen, a CASA Advocate Supervisor at Greater Mental Health of New York, who received the Mary Rich Award at the recent CASA of New York State's Diamond and Hearts Gala! In her role, Barbara has shown exceptional leadership, passion, and commitment to children in the child welfare system or at risk of placement. Our Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program upholds the fundamental belief that all children deserve a safe and nurturing home environment. Serving youth in foster care or at risk of placement, CASA volunteer advocates undergo specialized training to monitor physical, behavioral, and educational needs, providing critical recommendations to the family court system until each child maintains a sense of permanency. Behind the success of Greater Mental Health of New York's CASA program are a team of passionate and dedicated advocates like Barbara.
