The first in a series in which I grow increasingly aware of my mortality as we interview our current crop of interns.
It's a staple of every summer at LJC to welcome a new intern class to our offices! 👏 Working with students is always a ton of fun, and this year, we decided to put the class of 2024 to the test with some LJC trivia. Check out the first installment of our intern pop quiz as they tackle the trivia question: What year was LJC founded? 🤔 Here's a hint: while our firm was founded in 1999, it was incorporated with LJC in 2019. Check out their answers and let us know yours in the comments below! ⬇️

I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).
The GLO Center's new class of interns starts this week! You can get to know them here: https://lnkd.in/g56d-m8Q

POST-INTERNSHIP PATHWAYS AND PROSPECTS. In the past week,I had the opportunity of moderating a webinar session where Dr Eleazer Douglas-Iyalla Pepple talked extensively about POST-INTERNSHIP PATHWAYS AND PROSPECTS. It was a great opportunity to "share the screen" with such a seasoned clinician and leader who consistently turns to light the path of those trailing in this profession. The webinar session was one of the events held to celebrate house officers in Babcock University Teaching Hospital. Few Lessons from this: 1. Impromptu or not, every moderating session is an opportunity to leave a lasting impact on your audience. 2. Re-echo the speaker's message at every opportunity. This makes it settle in the heart of your audience. 3. Ask yourself what the people hope to achieve by attending, then speak, act, and steer the conversation in the direction of this goal. Needless to say, the session was a great one with many positive comments and feedback.

A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.
NACE Director of Research and Public Policy Mary Gatta recently spoke with NPR and WBUR's Here & Now about our position statement advocating for all internships to be paid and the actions we believe Congress must take to make this a reality. https://ow.ly/j4oJ50Pq5HK

A few months ago, we spoke with Carla Kersey, Project Development Coordinator at Kentucky Educational Development Corporation, who supports HS students through project-based internships. Here's a highlight from our conversation: "Project Based Learning is so much more than hands-on experiences in the classroom; it's also about workforce development." Discover how PBL can enhance teaching and learning and contribute to vital workforce development in our PBL Spotlights: PBL in Career & Tech Education, where National Faculty members share their perspectives on PBL & CTE. Higher Education Executive Leader | Transforming lives through Higher Education | Lifting student and staff voices while fostering welcoming and inclusive campus communities
I am so happy to meet with our students — whether it’s 2 or 12 or 20:— to learn about their Cougar Experience, what we do well, and areas we could do better. Today we spent quite a bit of time on internships. #GoCoogs #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #highereducation #studentvoice
Dr. Daniel Maxwell, our Associate VC/VP of Student Affairs, hosted “Donuts with Dr. Dan” session with his fellow colleagues Dr. Monica Thompson, Executive Director of University Career Services and Dr. Anne Dayton, Director of the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). The students shared their perspectives about internship opportunities and their cougar experience. The conversation was insightful, affirming, and filled with helpful feedback on the students experiences at UH. Thanks for coming out to chat, Coogs!
