Founder and Principal @ Freeman Consulting | Executive Leadership, Executive Consulting, and Nonprofit Fundraising Expert
One of the most informative projects I worked on at the Texas Association of Museums was the Finding Alternative Futures initiative. Funded by the Houston Endowment, this three-part project included self-paced learning online, one-on-one virtual coaching, and resource sharing and networking. Our modules covered the following topics: Online Programming: Virtual visitors are here to stay. Designing desirable online experiences and supporting them effectively through digital means is now a core program need. Operational Capacity and Continuity: Transitioning towards increasing digitally-enabled operations requires establishing new priorities and policies for business continuity. Community Engagement: Museums must use digital platforms to connect with and grow stronger in their community collaborations. Digital-Savvy Leadership: Managing today requires agile thinking, continuous and varied communication efforts, and other responsive actions. Understanding how digital tools and platforms support these key functions is critical. I've synthesized and portaged my learnings from this important project to benefit my new clients in the nonprofit world. Shout out to the team that made it possible: Deborah Howes, Koven Smith, Kate Livingston, MS, PCC, Kevin Diaz, Brian Crockett, Noël Harris, Ph.D., Katie Jackman, Brittany Petrilli, Emmy Laursen, Ed Rodley, and Ruth Ann Rugg. And Advisory Board: Dreanna Belden, Kippen de Alba Chu, Nik Honeysett, Hope Kandel, Dr. Kim McCray, Holly Witchey, Eric Lupfer, and Kathryn Mitchell. More at: https://lnkd.in/gnHBUpqP

Recently members of our consultancy and frontline teams facilitated the first of 3 learning sessions on systems change with the Connected Futures* partnerships. We shared our hypothesis for what it takes to change a system and learning from the No Wrong Door Collaborative (a partnership aiming to make systemic change to employment outcomes for Black Disabled People in Lambeth with Black Thrive). We discussed the elements of systemic change emerging across Connected Futures and why it can take time to get right. This includes: ⭐ Getting the right people in the room - including people with lived experience and partners who are willing to critically reflect on their role in the system. ⭐ Building deep and trusting relationships that enable you to challenge assumptions and existing ways of working. If you'd like to discuss your systems change challenges, get in touch for a chat with our team. Molly Calland, Eleanor Langdale, Ade Adebowale MIEP, Lily O'Flynn, Kezia Jackson-Harman. *Connected Futures is Youth Futures Foundation's flagship fund to support young people to get good jobs through pioneering local partnerships.

Expanding Our Circle: Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project Grows Stronger The Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project is thrilled to announce an exciting new phase in our journey of community empowerment and shared success for the first group Each of the families that have flourished with their piglets are now stepping into a role of leadership and mentorship. They are selecting ten more families based on specific criteria, presenting them to our project for consideration. Upon approval, these new families will join a savings group, with their nominating family as the chairperson. This isn’t just about adding numbers; it’s about strengthening the fabric of our community. The savings group serves as a platform for financial education, mutual support, and collective growth, all under the watchful guidance of the Sesera Youth’s Piglet Project. Imagine the impact: a network of families, interconnected and resilient, each contributing to and benefiting from the group’s collective wisdom and resources. This is the vision we’re bringing to life—one where every member is both a learner and a leader. Let’s celebrate this new chapter where empowerment is not just given, but earned and shared. Together, we’re building more than a project; we’re building a community legacy.

How can we drive innovation forward? We believe the answer lies with the next generation. That's why John Burns Research and Consulting recently partnered with SuitUp Incorporated, a nonprofit that develops students’ career awareness. Our collaborative effort focused on mentoring these young minds, guiding them through a creative process of brainstorming and presenting four affordable housing solutions. My personal favorite was "The Hive: reducing construction costs with offsite construction" (see below). Not only do the "Hive" Homes look great, the technology and efficiency of off-site manufacturing could reduce costs and speed up the home-building process. This is interesting and positive. I believe that in a decade or two homes will go the way of cars - to be manufactured in part or whole off site and assembled where needed. The astronomical rise of construction costs is a an inadvertent factor speeding this trend.

Thanksgiving is about gathering with family and friends to reflect on our blessings. And on Giving Tuesday, just a few days later, we are asked to support efforts to strengthen our communities and make the world a better place. At 5BORO, we are dedicated to building a better and stronger and more vibrant New York City that benefits all New Yorkers. And if you too believe in the future of the city like we do, I hope you’ll make a Giving Tuesday donation to 5BORO. Over the last year, our non-partisan think tank has punched above its weight – introducing innovative policy ideas to New Yorkers and shaping important conversations about the direction of our city at the highest levels. We developed a new housing model to maximize affordability and housing production in office-to-residential conversions and are engaging with policy makers, real estate leaders, academic institutions and co-living operators to make our housing pilot a reality. We created urgency around the need to get new migrants in our city into the workforce quickly with a proposal that would allow the city and state to take action on their own. We provided local leaders with a set of tools to address the staffing crisis in city government and saw several of our recommendations adopted. We mobilized quickly after toxic wildfire smoke engulfed New York to share best practices from around the world to improve air quality and protect New Yorkers. We’ve submitted testimony at the city, state and federal levels on housing, mental health, resiliency infrastructure and more. We’ve published a weekly newsletter that highlights key policy stories from our city and elevates creative policy initiatives and opinions from around the globe. We are just getting started at 5BORO. And with your help, we know we can have even more of a positive impact on our city. Your donation, no matter the size, will contribute to the success of the 5BORO Institute and help us reach even greater heights. Let us channel the spirit of Thanksgiving into positive action and sow the seeds of change within our city. Thank you for being here and for supporting our organization. And thank you for thinking of us on Giving Tuesday. Your investment in our work is an investment in NYC. Together we can make New York all that we know it can be. https://fiveboro.nyc
