At Reach, it seems that we have developed some of our own words. We celebrate Reachiversaies and call team members, Reachers, but the word I like most is "Reachify". Being in People Operations, I say this word daily. My definition of this verb is to take something and flip it sideways, approach the challenge with deep curiosity, find a balance between head and heart, and never settle for the "this is the way it has always been done". How do we address "people" issues in a Reachified way?  How do you help establish guardrails and frameworks so that people can succeed, but not impose policies and red tape where it is not needed (or welcomed)?  How do we approach recruiting in a way that is welcoming, inclusive, and focuses simultaneously on getting the best person for our team while prioritizing the applicant experience?  How do we support learning and development so that each team member can truly thrive and flourish as a human being? The list goes on and on. It is this level of creative, people-centered thinking that has me excited about the week to come.  At Reach, even the role of People Operations is Reachified!

It's my 5-year workiversary at AP! This is the longest I've ever worked at one place, though I've had three different official job titles and many, many other unofficial ones (like SEOphie and Prep Queen). Throughout those years, I have: - Contributed to hundreds of breaking news stories, either by ensuring we have the right prep ready to go, filing/editing the stories, getting them promoted across our social platforms and optimizing them for other audiences. - Worked through a career's worth of "unprecedented" moments in a front-row seat to the first draft of history. In turn, I have learned and relearned that superlatives are always problematic. - Been through two primaries and a general election. No one does elections coverage like AP. - Developed efficient systems and sustainable workflows. And iterated and innovated a lot. And while I am so proud of those accomplishments, the things I am more proud of are: - The way I have centered mental health in my daily work and with my teams. It's OK to not be OK or to need a break or to say the news is too hard. - Being an empathetic leader and someone who values the people behind the work above all else. - Leading our employee resource group focused on women's empowerment and opportunities. - All the friendships that have blossomed over the years.

It's that time of year again, when promotions and tenure decisions are made across universities and if you get on social media, you'll see all the wonderful posts full of pride and joy celebrating these career milestones. What's not commonly discussed especially on social media are painful career setbacks. So that's what I want to do today. I want to repost an article I wrote for Harvard Business Review that appeared in my LinkedIn feed this morning. If you are going through a setback at work, know that you aren't alone. A big storm is necessary to clear a big enough path for all the blessings coming your way. I know this may be hard to feel and believe if you are in the midst of dealing with a painful career setback but please read my article. I hope it helps you in some small way. You don’t have to face a career setback alone. You may not want to immediately share disappointing news with anyone, but when the time is right for you, know that there are people who will listen with compassion. The only person who has the power to define our worth is ourselves. Remember this and you'll come back stronger than ever and you'll find your happy place. For me, that happy place turned out to be Northwestern University an institution that had previously only lived in my dreams. My dream of being a professor at Northwestern is now my reality.
