Donor recognition is crucial, but it’s so much more than listing names in your collateral. “It’s about helping the donor understand how much your organization values their support and partnership,” says R&L development consultant Melanie Young Corcoran. “Find ways to celebrate donors that also strengthen your relationship with them. Recognition is just one piece. There are four aspects of successful donor relations: Acknowledgment; Reporting; Recognition; and Engagement. Think about donor stewardship from their perspective; what experience are you giving them? Make your acknowledgements personal—celebrate anniversaries of giving or giving thresholds. Then, are you also reporting on the impact of donor contributions? Are you inviting donors to engage with your organization or experience your mission? Are you really communicating the impact of your work? Ultimately, impact is what donors want to see.” R&L Consulting’s development experts can help you build a full-scale donor-stewardship plan. How do you know a donor is engaged with your organization? Is there a way to measure their engagement? If you knew for sure that some donors were more engaged than others, would it change how you connect and communicate with them? While you can’t really measure the generosity of someone’s spirit or their passion for your cause, you can analyze three major components of their engagement to understand how engaged with your organization someone is, and what their giving capacity might be. Recency, frequency, and monetary value (RFM) analysis gives you a starting point for donor cultivation strategies—helping you be more responsive and targeted in your approach. In order to understand exactly what RFM means to your efforts—and how to incorporate it into your responsive fundraising strategies—Virtuous created a comprehensive guide. This powerful resource ensures that you can get to work on implementing strategies immediately. Download for free: https://lnkd.in/eZT7KpSW

Monthly Tip from our Donor Outreach Blueprint (if you sign up you get them each month and I have to say they are GOOD!) This month's Donor Outreach tip is to have concept notes ready to send. Do you have short, concise concept notes at your disposal? If not, it's worth writing up a few high level concepts based on what priority programs you need funded over the next 6-12 months. By having high level descriptions at the ready, you can share them with donors in an email or even over a zoom call. This allows the donor to react quickly and for you jointly to determine if there's a fit. The end result? You want to get that call scheduled. Encourages the donor to ask for more information. Let me know if you are working towards this! Also you can access our Donor Outreach Blueprint on our Resources page!

Do you have a steady stream of new donors annually, but find yourself having a hard time retaining those donors year after year? You are not alone. We've all heard the statistic—it costs seven times more to acquire a new donor than to retain a current donor. So, how do we retain donors? What strategies can we implement that will ensure each donor's behavior is not only recognized, but feels their gift is meaningful? How do we retain donors and show them they are making a difference? If you want to retain donors but can’t seem to find the secret sauce—we've got you! A donor matrix is the best place to begin. Let’s start with unpacking a donor matrix. What is the matrix and how can it play a critical part in your organization’s donor relations efforts? Simply put, a donor matrix is a chart that shows how and when your organization stewards each donor segment. A donor matrix should be simple, straightforward, action-oriented, and include each of the donor segments you identify as vital to your organization. So, let's dive in and explore how you can develop a matrix that is not only a resource tool for everyone in your organization, but one that guides your donor relations program to success—including higher overall retention. Communications for your organization should inspire donors to give again. They should be: ⭐ Joyful ⭐ Fulfilling ⭐ Instantly satisfying ⭐ Empowering When developing a donor matrix, going back to these key elements will help drive your plan to produce communications that invoke positive relations with your organization. A donor matrix is one of the most powerful tools you can use to visualize your donor relations efforts and identify opportunities to improve your program. We're often asked how to create a comprehensive donor matrix, so of course, we had to create a step-by-step guide to show you! Follow this easy, 5-step process to create your own, and discover what your donor's experience is really like. #donorrelations #stepbystepguide #drg #donormatrix
