What is a "Doorknob Comment" you ask? That's a term therapists have been using forever to indicate things people say - hand sometimes literally on the doorknob - as they leave the office. They can range from more or less innocuous but always meaningful, to urgent and sometimes about immediate risk. Regardless, they open up something important when there is no clear way to address it... Fara and Grant discuss this in detail in episode 65 https://lnkd.in/ehFJXFXt

A big reason for misunderstanding is misreading others' expressions of emotions and assuming that they mean something universal. Professor Lisa Feldman Barrett points out startling and very reliable data that what we think facial expressions mean is very often not what the person is actually expressing. For example: People scowl in anger about 35% of the time. That means 65% of the time, people are doing something other than scowling when angry. And... about 50% of the time scowling means something other than anger. Such as intense concentration. The science of universal cross-cultural facial expression is inaccurate and misleading, along with other common beliefs about emotions and the body and brain. https://lnkd.in/g_mC6qsw
