Why is intercultural awareness and diversity, equity & inclusion so important to me? The UK is currently celebrating South Asian Heritage Month, which is held annually from July 18 to August 17 to honour, recognise, and appreciate South Asian history and culture. My South Asian heritage comes via my father, who although is ethnically Indian, he was born in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Having an East African Indian father and growing up in a small midlands town in the UK wasn't exactly easy. In fact, there were many times, as a child, and adult in the workplace, when I tried to erase or ignore my South Asian heritage because I felt embarrassed by it. This is the reason why intercultural awareness and diversity, equity and inclusion are so important to me. Because no one should ever feel like they should hide any part of their identity to 'fit in'. And if through my work, I can support others in better understanding cultural similarities and differences and celebrating these points of understanding, then I believe we can create a world where everyone feels accepted, appreciated, and valued for who they truly are. WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOR DIALOGUE AND DEVELOPMENT 2024 In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. In December 2022, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/249, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. What Day Is National Diversity Day? Every year on May 21st, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development urges everyone to do their part to bridge the gap between cultures. The day is often referred to as Diversity. Why Is World Diversity Day Celebrated? 2022 marks the end of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures, which seeks to promote mutual understanding and reciprocal knowledge of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. How Do We Celebrate World Cultural Diversity Day? Listen to traditional music from a different culture. Have a traditional or cultural dress day at work. Enjoy or share home-cooked food from a different culture. Attend a different traditional or cultural engagement. What Are The 4 Types Of Diversity? There are generally four different types of diversity: internal, external, organizational, and worldview—and you should aim to understand and represent them all. Keep reading to learn more about each one and how diversity affects the workplace. 1. Support sustainable systems of governance for culture. 2. Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals. 3. Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks. 4. Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. Why Is It Important To Celebrate Cultures? Cultural celebrations foster respect and open-mindedness for other cultures. Celebrating our differences, as well as our common interests, helps unite and educate us. To understand other's perspectives, to broaden our own, and to fully experience and educate ourselves. Today, is Canadian Multiculturalism Day. In 1971, Canada became the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy--to preserve cultural freedom and recognize the contributions of all cultural communities in Canadian society. Now, multiculturalism is a defining feature of who we are as Canadians. Multiculturalism is about creating a society that values Canadians of all backgrounds, religions and ethnicities. It’s a recognition that Canada is strong, not in spite of our differences, but because of them. Inclusivity and diversity make us stronger--and working together, we are more than equal to the challenges ahead of us. Happy Multiculturalism Day Canada!

What is Harmony Week? It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Why orange? Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. Our cultural diversity Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation. Facts and figures There are some fascinating statistics about Australia's diversity that can be good conversation-starters: - nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was - we identify with over 300 ancestries - since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia - 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia - apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi - more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.
