Impressions from our apprentice workshop. ▶ To get to know the material and get a feel for the process, our youngest apprentices are currently busy filing by hand. This allows them to experience the feel, texture and structure of the material and improve their own precision and quality awareness. #koeppern #maschinenfabrik #trainingworkshop #apprenticeworkshop #apprentices #filing #precision #quality #future

Interesting article that touches on recurring subjects I've met throughout my career. Isn't every year in practice an apprenticeship? I do wonder though where this sits within the context of streamlining the whole building process and achieving the government's goals of making it far more efficient. Surely a knowledge of the basics is essential to stand a chance of entertaining the latest CAD and AI technology.

In May 2023, the Heritage Crafts Association sounded the alarm on the endangered status of stained glass window crafting, igniting a response from cultural advocates. The urgency of the situation was underscored by a BBC One feature on December 24th, 2023, showcasing a pioneering apprenticeship scheme. This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between Swansea College of Art UWTSD, the British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP), The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass and key industry figures, culminating in the creation of a government-funded Stained Glass Craftsperson Apprenticeship with final assessment by Icon - The Institute of Conservation. While the Apprenticeship represents a significant stride in safeguarding the craft's legacy, attracting suitable candidates for the programme is imperative. However, the broader landscape of arts education faces challenges due to funding cuts, resulting in a dearth of resources and limited classroom time dedicated to creative subjects. To address this, proactive measures are essential to inspire young individuals about the potential of a career in stained glass. Against this backdrop, initiatives such as the Reflections of The Lord Mayor (#LMReflects) Stained Glass Roundel Design Competition https://lnkd.in/er_StHhA - has organically developed into a modest yet meaningful source of opportunity for #stainedglass artists and young enthusiasts alike since its inception in 2017. It continues to draw stained glass artists and introduce the craft to younger generations, initially involving primary school students and Junior Sea Cadets in 2018. The competition's growth to encompass young people from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) | Official in 2019 and St John Ambulance Badgers in 2023, and the recent introduction of an #ArtsAwardExplore initiative in #stainedglassart with MSSC (Marine Society & Sea Cadets) in January 2024 underscores a dedicated effort to nurture a passion for #stainedglass artistry among youth. The engagement extends beyond just participation; past victors - Julia Gonyou (2018) and Siobhan Rimmer (2020) - have actively offered countless young people a tactile and engaging experience with #stainedglass, fostering dialogue as shown here, and might potentially igniting future careers in this traditional art form. As we navigate this pivotal moment, it is crucial for all stakeholders, be it artists, patrons, educators, or enthusiasts, to contemplate their role in upholding the legacy of stained glass craftsmanship to ensure its luminosity continues illuminating our cultural heritage. "THE WEW MISSION IS TO INSPIRE AND EMPOWER WOMEN IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY BY ADVOCACY, CONNECTING, SUPPORTING AND UNLOCKING OUR FULL POTENTIAL" Education. Information. Mentorship. Advocacy. Studying history helps us understand and grapple with complex questions and dilemmas by examining how the past has shaped (and continues to shape) global, national, and local relationships between societies and people. Studying current events helps students better understand their global community and the different cultures across the world. It is very easy to get caught up in our own lives and problems, and learning about current events can both ground and remind students of the world that exists beyond their communities. WEW’s summer series sponsored by m2e Consulting Engineers presented the life and study of Traci Miller of Miller Construction Company. Grace B. an intern who graduated May 2023 and interned locally in Miami was a great candidate for this experience. What we know is that history and legacy has a story inevitably to be told (who will tell it?) The life and legacy of Traci as seen through the eyes of young architect Grace is forthcoming and will be shared across several platforms. In the words of Grace B. "Traci is a true renaissance woman." As classes begin at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University we can only imagine how the students and friends of Grace in the Master's program will be indirectly impacted by the study of Traci's life. #mentortracing #advocacy #education #information #historyhasastory #whowilltellit #wewsummerseries Wishing all returning students a great school year! #FutureofLearning #FutureofTeaching This is Circinus. They are 17 and they are working as my spring intern in 2024 at Mezzacello Urban Farm. Circ has a lot of experience as a camp counselor with Girl Scouts, and a genius mind for relating ideas together in fun and inventive ways. Here Circinus is training 8 student interns and two adult teachers in the way to teach the four Design Challenges they designed as part of their Metro Early College High School internship through the BODIES Learning Lab at the PAST Foundation. The training happened yesterday here at my urban farm, and the interns aged 9-13 were spellbound and very scared by the audacious design challenges Circinus was teaching them TEACH during summer camps and Workshops. You may be curious what they were. Here is one: Molecular Mettle: Six biosphere geodesic balls with an element assigned to them. The teams at the camp will each get two. They must create an origami bird, an origami rabbit, and an origami cicada. Each of the origami pages will have at least three examples of how (example: Nitrogen) interacts in the atmosphere (top of sphere, closest to sun), the ground (middle of the sphere), and the soil (bottom of the sphere). Then when it's all done, they will all come together and explain to each other the complex ways molecules and atoms (Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, Phosphorous, and Sulphur) interact with energy and resources to allow life to exist. The other three were Simple Machines Solitaire, Water Wars, and Eco Heroes. I am very proud of Circinus. They did an amazing job of thinking like a kid in a paradigm shifting world of Climate Reality. They made it fun and easy to tackle these HUGE concepts for kids. My question to you is this: What more can we do to find and make space for creative solutions to teaching complex and multi-disciplinary learning strategies to kids everywhere?

A few weeks ago, I talked about Spruce’s relationship with Rider University and how we welcome entrepreneurial students onto our team every year to discuss project ideas. Well, this year’s group has arrived! We’re looking into mechanizing in the industry. With more automatic machines and robotics, we may need less custodial staff, but we certainly need more mechanics. Our biggest problem is that fewer kids want to become mechanics. For this year’s project, our students are going to explore the idea of attracting new talent. Our mechanics at Spruce are getting older, and we need more already. The project we’re considering is partnering with vocational schools to create an apprenticeship at Spruce with an opportunity for a job at the end. The students are going to research the viability of this idea and let us know if we should implement it or not. We took our students’ advice last year, and it’s gone great—I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time! #opportunity #business #leadership #entrepreneurship #mechanics

Future Link’s 15th Anniversary Spotlight series features a select few of the countless people and community partners who have contributed to Future Link’s success. Anne and Dave’s Mentor-Mentee partnership was a natural fit as Anne completes her bachelor’s degree in architecture, guided by Dave’s deep knowledge of the industry. Dave shares: “Since working with Anne, I have learned her love of architecture is driven by altruism and equity. Following in her late uncle’s footsteps, she wants to carry forth his mission of designing affordable, sustainable housing for families of limited financial means. Simultaneously, she intends to work towards ending the systemic inequities of the profession that has resulted in less than .5% of all licensed architects being black women. No doubt, she will accomplish both.” Anne values Dave’s support: “Dave truly cares about my success. One of my favorite memories with him is when we first visited Gensler and he introduced me to an architect I grew closer to. He has helped me improve my professional story for internship and scholarship applications. He is simply the best!” To Become a Future Link Mentor: https://lnkd.in/e9Rns_qg #shapingfutureprofessionals #firstgenprofessionals #futurelinkmd #futurelinkmentors #mentorsmakeadifference #findyourwhy #volunteersmakeitpossible #nextgenworkforcedevelopment #workforcedevelopment #mentorsmatter
