Excited to see fena featured in the Paypers Unlocking the Potential of A2A Payments Report 2024. Here at fena, we've been bringing the power and efficiency of Open Banking to UK SMEs for nearly four years. In a nutshell, we translate the complex world of payments and data APIs powered by Open Banking into products that can be easily adopted by non-tech businesses. Wider adoption of technologies like Open Banking will only be possible when your typical mom-and-pop business can get their hands on it and integrate it into their day-to-day business processes—no jargon or API docs required 😁 . This is why, alongside our Open Banking payments, we've built the Fena Toolkit—an all-in-one platform for SME businesses to manage their inventory, products, suppliers, and customers. And it comes with Open Banking built in. Interesting article of how A2A (Bank Account to Bank Account) Pyament Processin might substitue conventional card processing.
Payment Card Processing 🆚 A2A Payment Processing + a Market Map (is any company missing?). Let’s dive in: Payment Card Processing involves a complex network including cardholders, banks, merchants, and processors, working through authorization, settlement, and funding stages. Technological advancements are pushing this system towards an automated, service-oriented model, enhancing efficiency and customer experience. A2A Payment Processing simplifies transactions by directly transferring funds between bank accounts, bypassing traditional intermediaries. This method is bolstered by Open Banking and APIs, enabling seamless and instant payments. The shift to A2A payments is driven by consumer demand for faster, more convenient payment options, contrasting with the slower innovation pace of card payments. Open Banking plays a crucial role in this transition, facilitating direct, at-the-point sale transactions, reducing merchant fees, and enhancing security through Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). In essence, while Payment Card Processing has historically dominated digital commerce, the emergence of A2A Payment Processing indicates a move towards more streamlined, secure, and efficient payment methods, fueled by technological progress and changing consumer demands. Payment orchestration is a sector with significant growth prospects: The income generated by specialized fintech orchestrators currently stands below US$25 million. This suggests that the market is in its early stages, especially considering the Total Addressable Market (TAM) is approximately US$10 billion. This indicates a substantial opportunity for expansion for service providers in this space. 💳The landscape for Card and A2A Payment Processing: We can broadly classify the provider landscape into "Traditional" and "Next Generation" providers. Traditional providers primarily target financial institutions, while Next-Generation providers successfully realize strong growth and high valuations by focusing on previously underserved categories such as debit and prepaid cards, virtual cards, B2B payments and Open Banking. Next-Generation providers target fintechs and corporates, often using "as-a-service" business models, but are likely to target financial institutions to seek cost savings. Payment Gateway 🆚 Payment Switch Let’s dive in👇 In the fast-paced world of FinTech, Payment Gateways, and Payment Switches are often considered the heart and lungs of digital transactions. While they function in tandem, their roles are distinct yet complementary. A Payment Gateway serves as a digital cashier that secures and streamlines end-to-end transactions for businesses. It acts as a conduit between a customer's bank and a merchant’s platform, safeguarding sensitive data like card details. Once it verifies fund availability, it processes the payment and moves the funds to the merchant's account, typically within a couple of days. Within this framework lies the Payment Switch, the silent maestro of transaction processing. It resides inside the payment gateway and focuses on the micro-level details. For instance, when a payment request is made, the switch uses mechanisms like Bank Identification Numbers (BINs) to identify the corresponding banks and routes the transaction securely. In a nutshell, the payment gateway sets the stage for secure, smooth transactions, while the payment switch orchestrates the finer details. Together, they enhance transaction speed, safety, and reliability, acting as the linchpins of modern digital commerce. Marcel van Oost is often pinpoint-accurate when addressing the heart of crucial topics. This time, he's focusing on the distinction between payment gateways and payment switches. I encourage you to review his post; I won’t rehash what he's already detailed there. What I find intriguing is that in 99% of our discussions with potential clients, there seems to be a lack of clarity regarding these terms. This makes it challenging to explain the benefits of implementing both switch and the gateway. Just imagine having the leverage to negotiate with acquirers.
