I do not like the textbook definition of LEADERSHIP. 🤷♀️ A quick Google search returns leadership being defined as: 🔘 action of leading people or an organisation 🔘 ability to influence and guide followers 🔘 process which maximises the efforts of others to achieve a goal And honestly, I do not like any of them! Why? ❌ All of them imply the ‘outside-in’ direction, something that is being done to people by someone who knows better. ❌ All of them assume that people need to be guided and influenced constantly. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠? On this week's episode of Workforce 4.0, I asked Paul Miklautsch what one piece of career advice that we give himself when he first started his career. His answer was 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝. It was this question that sparked an in depth conversation on building and champion leaders early on in manufacturing and the power behind influence. The most impactful thing that Paul shared with us had to have been: "𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞." And once our younger generations of the workforce realize that, we can give them tools on how they build their influence to lead effectively. Personally, this conversation had a huge impact on how I view leadership and influence. We all started somewhere in this industry and a lot of us became influencers by doing. Whether we call it "𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭. Either way, this conversation is a great reminder that no matter where you are in this industry or what your formal title or discipline is in, the power to drive change and influence the future generations of our workforce rests on us equally.
