At NTC last year I did a talk about Cost Per Dollar Raised and how we could show, mathematically, that ANY cut to anything that had a CTRD of < 1 released money short term but meant long term decline in revenue. In some of my examples I even used cases where fundraising became more expensive, going from some small cost to an absolutely wild cost (like, $0.20 to $0.90) and how it still was better to keep it going, and would make even more if you doubled down (assuming the CTRD didn't change by doubling down). I also talked about how some things will, at first glance have a CTRD of over 1, but might need to be taken into a larger context (like acquisition). But the fundamental lesson can be summed up in Louis' post this morning. Cutting rarely actually gives you a net benefit. There are often ways to reduce expenses without reducing production, but the moment you cut production itself, you are dooming a future version of your nonprofit for short term "gain." #nonprofitlife #fundraisingmetrics #fundraisingoperations
