At Tide Rock, we pride ourselves on our track record in investor returns and consistently growing every portfolio company we own. But as hard as we try, we're not perfect. We recently faced challenges with a company we'd grown significantly but had to sell at a loss due to external factors out of our control and some of our own missteps. It was a tough decision, but a necessary grooming of our portfolio. We believe in transparency and accountability, so I personally called a meeting with investors to walk them through the details: our initial thesis, what went right and wrong, the mistakes we made, and the changes we've made to our processes to avoid repeating them. What surprised me was how our investors were taken aback by our transparency. They shared stories of other firms hiding failures, and many said they'd never seen this level of honesty and authenticity from an investment company.   I have been quiet for quite some time on LinkedIn for a number of reasons but today I break the silence to share a momentous milestone for HalpinRobbins – we are celebrating a decade of innovation, growth, and unwavering resilience in ecological and environment services. When we first started, I was reminded that 20% of new businesses will fail in year one, 45% by year 5 and a staggering 65% will fail by year 10 and given the advice to not worry if it didn’t work out. Well not only has HalpinRobbins defied the odds, but we have emerged as a beacon of strength and have navigated the complexities of 3 general elections, weathered the storms of 2 referendums (Scotland and EU), tackled the challenges of 1 pandemic, and stood firm in the face of a recession.
