That's progress! In 1954 Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes. His time -- 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. When Bannister ran his historic race, I love how the stadium announcer added drama to the event by teasing the crowd by delaying his announcement of Bannister's race time for as long as possible: "Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event nine, the one mile: first, number forty one, R. G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which—subject to ratification—will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was three..." The roar of the crowd drowned out the rest of the announcement! Interestingly, after all those years of runners attempting to run a sub four minute mile, Bannister's record stood for only 46 days before being broken by a runner named John Landy. But I think the most interesting part of the four minute mile story is that in 2023, there were 165 NCAA runners who ran sub four minute miles. That's progress! Business is the same as the runner's story. We need to learn more, be more efficient, and continue to do better, and be better, than we were the year before. And sometimes we need someone to show us what is possible! #leadership #progress

I wanted to share a recent #gbr episode featuring The Prince & Princess of Wales and The Princess Royal chatting about rugby because as the conversation flows the language used to describe this sport, you begin to uncover striking similarities with businesses that are often operating either on a shoestring budget, propelled by private equity, SMEs, and or B Corps. These entities face a daily battleground, challenging multinational giants, but it is the team spirit and drive to press on no matter how hard or bad the situation, you will cross over the line and if your lucky bag a few "bonus points" along the way. 🤜#irfu ✅ Making the hard yards - equates to senior leadership making tough decisions to keep the business afloat, decisions that most colleagues may not even be aware of. ✅ Constant innovation & preparation -mirrors the diligence and agility required to bring products to market swiftly. ✅ Continuous improvement - underlines the need to refine and enhance operations continually. ✅ Fronting up - signifies unwavering belief in your brand and team. ✅ Digging deep - is akin to the final push as a critical milestone approaches. ✅ Team morale - boosting colleagues' spirits, no matter how dire the situation. ✅ Community - reflects the commitment to giving back and making a positive impact in your local area. ✅ Effective communication - MOST IMPORTANTLY is the thread that ties it all together, just as it does in rugby and business alike. These parallels show that in the world of business, like in rugby, it's the values, determination, and teamwork that often make the difference between success and struggle. So take a step back and take the time to genuinely understand and appreciate each of their colleagues to cultivate a robust organisational culture. In doing so, you'll pinpoint individuals: ✔️ Who consistently go above and beyond for the organization. ✔️ Possessing well-rounded characters, readily capable of boosting team morale when the situation demands it. ✔️ Who naturally embodies the leadership your team needs to thrive. Something brilliant has been transpiring on the south coast of England in the small city of Brighton and Hove. Brighton and Hove Albon F.C have not only transformed their fortunes on the football pitch in the said decade and a half, in no small part to their fantastic chairman TonyBloom but also added value to their local economy off the pitch thanks to their on-field success. Tony Bloom’s era began in League One and Brighton currently finds itself among the premier league regulars with strong finances grounded in a shrewd transfer policy that would be the envy of any club across the premier league. The ethos of scouting young players, who have the potential to be world-beaters and giving them a platform to achieve just that in the world’s most popular league and then shipping them off to the bigger clubs for exorbitant price tags has been a phenomenal success. They have sold Ben White (50 million£), Marc Cucurella (55 million£ + 7 million£ in add-ons) and Moises Caicedo (100 million£ + 15 million£ in add-ons) in just the last three years. Their squad is brimming with multiple talents (Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Julio Enciso and many more) that could fetch similar sums in the coming years. They have built up a setup to be able to identify the right coaches over the years to continue and build on the success they have had previously. When Graham Potter was lured away by Chelsea (not before having to pay a fat fee to Brighton), they found a replacement in Roberto De Zerbi, who has got Brighton playing so well that you would be forgiven for thinking that he has been there for the last decade. They are already playing in European competition this season, what Brighton could achieve in the coming years is anybody’s guess but it would take a brave person to bet against them. This is a case of how management at the top could completely transform any institution through long-term vision, a strong fundamental understanding of all areas of the business and passion for the project. #BrightonandHoveAlbionFC #Football #Business #Transfers
Tony Bloom has been recognised for his services to football and the city of Brighton and Hove in the 2024 King's New Year Honours List. 👏

How do you respond when asked to play a role less than you desire? I remember the #DetroitTigers of the 1970s, and Gates Brown. He wanted to be a starting outfielder. And he did start occasionally. But he made the record books as a pinch hitter. See the records he still holds below. I think of Manu Ginoblli with the San Antonio Spurs. The 6th man. Led the second team. Now in the HoF. I could go on. Our job is to do the best in the role we are given. Not complain, not do less than our best. I believe when we do that things will work out. How do you serve in those roles? #personalgrowth #ProfessionalSuccess #intentionalliving

I've been playing a lot of chess lately and noticed a trend that maybe applies to a work environment. When most people lose their queen, they give up and forfeit the game. They also expect that if they take out your queen, you'll likely do the same. However, if you don't give up after losing your queen, you've got good odds of winning because people don't actually know how to win against you any other way. This was their one trick. Alright, Liam, what is all this rambling? 1. If you lose the most versatile piece on your team, don't freak out. Let the other pieces continue to do their job. After all, a pawn can always become a queen. 2. Is your competition missing their queen/having a bad game currently? Now what? How do you win? Do you even know how to win if your competition isn't giving up? 3. Tricks are easy to spot after awhile. People doing the same moves again and again. Spot the tricks and get around them.

Today I’m celebrating with my son. Here, he’s at the opening ceremony in Tobago as the Captain for the Jamaica Heoerman Cup Golf Team. The team took 3rd place. He was disappointed with his personal final day score when he made a 10 on the last hole. (If you don’t know golf, that's not a score you want) He returned home, and upon reflection, new awareness and perspective, he made some adjustments to his routine. This week, he played in a 2 day tournament and shot 9 under, tying the course record at 63 and winning the tournament. Here’s what I want you to know - he doesn’t regret making the 10. Because of it, he discovered some habits that had been working against him. It helped him to learn and grow. Cheers to the wins that don’t look like a win until you look for them. What kinda' win are you celebrating today? Share it with us in the comments below! Let's inspire each other and create a positive ripple effect. 🌟 Have a beautiful weekend ❤️ #CelebrateEveryMoment #FindJoyInSmallWins #CelebrateEveryStep #PathToGreatness" #Growth #Success #Change #GetCoached #LeadershipCoaching #MindsetCoach #LeadershipDevelopment #PersonalDevelopment #SmallWins #CelebrateSuccess #KeepGoing #OvercomingObstacles #TeamSuccessStory #AuthenticLeadership #TrustWins
