#Indonesia faces a significant challenge with waste management, particularly plastic pollution. Here’s a breakdown of the problem and some solutions being implemented:
The Problem:
High Waste Generation: Indonesian cities produce a massive amount of waste, with Jakarta generating over 8 tons per day. Organic waste makes up a large portion of this, around 50%.
Plastic Pollution: Plastic waste is a major concern, with improper disposal leading to clogged waterways and environmental damage.
Limited Waste Management Infrastructure: Many areas rely on open dumping and burning of waste, which is harmful to health and the environment.
Solutions:
Government Initiatives: The government has introduced regulations like bans on single-use plastic bags and is promoting waste reduction at the national level.
Waste Banks: These community-run initiatives collect and sort recyclables, providing income for participants and diverting waste from landfills.
Composting: Encouraging people to compost food scraps at home can significantly reduce the amount of organic waste requiring disposal.
Public Awareness: Educating citizens about waste reduction, recycling, and proper disposal methods is crucial for long-term solutions.
Challenges:
Uneven Implementation: Enforcing regulations and developing proper infrastructure remains a challenge across all regions.
Public Participation: Encouraging consistent waste management practices among the population requires ongoing education and behavior change.
Indonesia is working on solutions, but it’s a complex issue that requires continued effort from the government, businesses, and the public.

Plastic waste is increasingly threatening the earth. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) states that plastic is part of the largest marine waste with an amount reaching 85 percent of total marine waste and is the most dangerous. To reduce this plastic waste, along with several other foundations, EcoNusa Foundation provided support to the Cahaya Samudera Indonesia Foundation to build plastic waste processing sites on Rhun and Pisang Islands, the Banda Islands, Maluku.
Communities in the two islands collect plastic waste and send it over for processing into flakes or recycled into fuel such as gasoline and diesel for their daily use.

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international product standard that establishes requirements for recycling, social and environmental certification. The purpose of GRS certification is to specify criteria to ensure accurate claims and minimize environmental impact.
Using recycled plastic means that we supports the circular economy, where unutilized plastic waste in landfills can be recycled into 'Recycled Plastic Pellets' as an eco-friendly production material♻️
Due to high demand in recycled products, we aim to meet international standards to fit consumers needs that require GRS certification as a benchmark to enhance trust in recycled products.
We proudly announce that PT ETERNA PERSADA INDONESIA, a part of Pan Era Group, has achieved GRS certification and successfully passing stringent audits from collection to recycling and distribution stages✨

My late father had this saying:
Cleaning is sweeping dirt under the rug.
Thorough cleaning is sweeping ALL dirt under the rug.
Imagine every country would be stuck with its waste.
Now think there was no rug and we'd be stuck with our waste where we live.
Now think which countries would flourish and which dwindle.
Think of the economic implications. Infinite growth anyone?

Sometimes we need to have the hard conversation
Plastic recycling is not working right now
We are adding more new plastic plants than recycling capacity and less than 9% of the 9 billion tons of plastic produced since 1950 has been recycled
Now China has closed its borders for plastic waste, it is shipped to other places such as Indonesia
Meanwhile, the plastic industry has been effective with their lobbying and marketing efforts to sell more plastic (see articles in comments)
It is time to focus on refuse, reduce and reuse and switch to alternatives
How does it make you feel when you see this?

Solving the plastic waste crisis is something I get to think about daily. But - taking a step back - here are a few simple messages jumped out for me after seeing this video from World Economic Forum:
1. We need to get serious about plastic reduction:
The reason that plastic is being exported from North America, Europe and elsewhere is that the amount of plastic used is more than the recycling infrastructure can handle. As well as demand-driven reductions, we need to find the right incentives, and back innovative solutions, so that manufacturers and brands have viable alternatives to plastic.
2. Recycling infrastructure needs massive investment:
As much as we might want to emphasize reduction as the key, the evidence suggests that global plastic use is going to continue rocketing for a while. As Martijn Lopes Cardozo pointed out, we are adding more new plastic plants than recycling capacity. So if we want to keep it out of oceans, waterways and other natural ecosystems, we need to properly fund collection, processing and recycling infrastructure and systems.
3: The burden of plastic consumption shouldn't fall on the Global South:
Plastic use per person is higher in Europe, North America and other wealthier parts of the globe than in the Global South. It's not an acceptable solution to export plastic waste "for recycling" to countries that are already struggling to tackle their own plastic burden. While this is changing, with restrictions on exports being introduced, support for Global South economies that have had - and still have - to deal with imported waste is also necessary.
rePurpose Global has two projects in Indonesia that build and support plastic recovery and recycling systems. But this is only part of the solution, and we are looking for more support and new innovations to tackle the problem more holistically.
Please reach out if you have any reactions to this video, or have any interest or ideas for how to partner with us or amplify our work.
H/T Martijn Lopes Cardozo for bringing this video to my attention.

As we know, 🌿agricultural waste management is a significant challenge, and plastic waste is a substantial part of it. I've decided to take a step towards making a difference by joining the Precious Plastic community, an incredible organization dedicated to promoting plastic recycling and creating businesses that thrive on waste management.
Did you know that the CEA industry in Almeria alone generates a staggering 33,500 tons of waste annually, with 15% (around 5,025 tons) ending up in landfills and illegal dumping (as mentioned in FoodUnfolded by Inés Oort Alonso ) This is just a small part of the global agricultural plastic waste problem. By recycling agricultural plastic waste, we can avoid massive CO2 emissions from landfilling and burning, as well as illegal ocean dumping. It's crucial we take responsibility for our industry's waste and turn it into a valuable resource. ♻️
I'm excited to be part of a network that shares knowledge, resources, and innovation to tackle this challenge. Precious Plastic 's open-source approach and commitment to collaboration inspire me, and I look forward to contributing to this movement. Plus, I'm encouraged by the success stories like ROBRIES in Indonesia, which emerged from the Precious Plastic community and is making a significant impact in plastic recycling! 🤝
Let's work together towards a more sustainable agriculture industry, where waste becomes a valuable asset, not a liability. We can make a difference! 🌈

Growing up in #Indonesia, #plastic#waste in the nature is a heartache matter.
😳 Indonesia faces a significant plastic waste crisis that profoundly impacts its environment. The country generates approximately 3.2 million tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste annually, with around 1.29 million tonnes ending up in the sea. Additionally, an alarming 10 billion plastic carry bags, equivalent to 85,000 tonnes, are released into the local environment each year. These unmanaged plastics have also severely affected Indonesian rivers and the ocean, contributing to pollution and posing risks to human health.
😪 The situation is exacerbated by plastic waste imports from Western countries, which are often burned as fuel by local communities, leading to respiratory illnesses and long-term health problems. Harmful chemicals from these plastics have contaminated the local food chain, exposing people to toxins associated with serious health issues such as cancer, diabetes, and immune system damage.
Below is a video from Vanessa Amanda, a hiker, who showed the plastic waste at Gunung Kerinci... and err.. that mountain is one quite difficult to hike!
I can't think of any simple solution. Maybe you guys have some #direct_action ideas?
