We are using a lot of, let’s say, intuitive and playful methods in the workshops that we do that are influenced by neurological science... What feelings do I sense when this person talks about their motivation? Where in my body do I sense this? And the one with courage tries to get a glimpse into the future so what can—what shines through? What potential do I also foresee from what this person is telling me for this partnership? "

Last week at Fast Company's Innovation Festival, I interviewed Colleen Cutcliffe, cofounder and CEO of microbiome startup Pendulum Therapeutics, and actor, producer, and director Halle Berry. Yes yes yes, I can hear you, "Another celebrity brand partnership, Jeff? In WELLNESS, no less? Nothing new. Nothing to see here." I get it. But I'd encourage you to hold that thought for a couple of reasons. First, because Pendulum is a company that's differentiating in a very crowded and growing category. And second, we're talking about Halle effing Berry. This is a unique relationship that isn't just hold-the-bottle-and-smile. In February, she was named the company's Chief Communications Officer, and has been actively working with Pendulum since. We talked about what that actually means, how it happened, how it illustrates the evolving nature of celebrity/brand partnerships, and where it goes from here. Colleen Cutcliffe on giving Berry a real job at the company: "We didn't want to have a meaningless title. And so Chief Communications Officer really is about two-way communication with [her audience]-- What are the messages that they're trying to tell her? What's resonating about the products, what's not resonating? --and the communication that Halle brings back for us to be able to build together. So the title has a very deep meaning." Halle Berry on her overall approach to brand partnerships: "I got to a point where I was no longer interested in just being that dancing bear. You know? I didn't want someone just to give me a fat paycheck, and I've never done that in my career, really. I've said no to a lot of dollars just because I knew I would be inauthentic and I would be lying. And what I'm most proud of about my career is that I think I do have a relationship with people and there's a trust, I've been honest about all of my ups and downs and life, and I've kind of been an open book. And so I take that relationship and the trust I have with people very seriously. So for me, I'm down this path of life where if I don't believe in it, I don't wanna be a part of it." 🤔𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀❓ We've all heard the buzz around collagen in recent years. But have you heard of collagen tripeptides, and the specific benefits the bring to your formulations? ✨𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻? Collagen is a structural protein that acts as a building block for your bones, teeth, muscles, skin, joints and connective tissues. Think of it like a structural glue that holds your body together. It helps to build our skin, connective tissue and bones, but cannot be absorbed through our diet in its full form. While your body can make its own collagen, your ability to do so gets worse with age. In fact, studies have shown that collagen production begins to slow in your 20s, and as we continue to grow older our bodies begin to break down collagen proteins faster than we can make them. As this happens, we begin to lose about 1% of our collagen per year and will have lost around a third of our collagen by the time we hit 40 years old. 🎯𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗱𝘀? Tripeptides are very specifc short chains of peptides that contain only 3 amino acids. While almost all collagen found in supplements is hydrolyzed into peptides (broken down into small chunks), those peptides are usually of different lengths - ranging from just two amino acids to 100+ in a chain. This difference in molecular weight is important, as sudies have suggested the smaller chains like tripeptides are absorbed faster and are less prone to being broken down into single amino acids during digestion. 💊𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲? 𝟭. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Smaller tripeptides are more easily absorbed by the body, ensuring effective delivery to target tissues. 𝟮. 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀: Small tripeptides also directly stimulates collagen synthesis, by providing the direct building blocks for collagen proteins directly to our body. 𝟯.
